Bean and Smith put Village back on track
North Village 4 St George’s 1Keishen Bean and Pierre Smith both bagged braces as North Village thrashed St George’s in the Digicel Premier League at Bernard Park yesterday.Village created a hatful of chances and could have won by an even greater margin against a St George’s side who rarely troubled Rams’ veteran goalkeeper Dwayne (Streaker) Adams.Shaun Goater’s side, in desperate need of a win having lost their opening two games of the season against Wolves in the league and Somerset Trojans in the Dudley Eve took the lead through Keishen Bean after ten minutes. The Bermuda international kept his cool to calmly loop his header beyond outrushing St George’s keeper Zico Burgess after latching onto a diagonal pass from deep.At the other end Allan Douglas Jr then stung the fingertips of keeper Adams with a venomous volley from the edge of box, which the evergreen shot stopper did well to tip over the bar.Had it not been for a superb diving challenge by Ernest Signor, Bean could have extended the hosts’ lead after racing into the box before being tackled just when he was about to pull the trigger.St George’s were struggling to contain Village’s lively strike force with Ralph Bean looking far more comfortable playing in his customary striker position than he did as a midfielder in his team’s recent matches. The Village talisman was causing St George’s defence all sorts of problems and played a neat one-two with Jemeiko Jennings who struck the post from distance just before the interval.Village continued to dominate after the break, extending their lead when a neat Ralph Bean pull back found his strike partner namesake Keishen Bean, who took a touch before hammering his shot past a helpless Burgess.St George’s reduced the deficit when Jahron Dickinson was the chief beneficiary of some sloppy Village defending, tapping home from close range, although Rams soon restored their two-goal advantage through Smith whose miskick from Cory Boyce’s cross sneaked past Burgess. While Smith’s first goal was slightly fortuitous there was nothing lucky about his second with the pacey striker firing home after good work down the right wing by Ralph Bean.Goater admitted if had been crucial to pick up their first win of the campaign against St George’s and was encouraged by the number of chances his team created.“It was very important we won today after losing our first two games. We knew we would have to dig deep to get the job done and I was happy to see starting to put away some of the chances we are creating,” said Goater.“I thought Ralph Bean showed his quality for us today; he always causes opposing defenders problems.”North Village: D Adams, P Cassell, K Talbot, J Davis (S Jennings, 78), T Brown, K Dill, K Bean, J Jennings, R Bean (M Swan, 78), P Smith, C Boyce (S Ming, 78)Substitutes not used: R DublinGoals: Bean, 10, 47, Smith 52, 76Yellow cards: J JenningsSt George’s: Z Burgess, D Signor, M Paynter, E Signor, J Daniels, C Ottley, J Bassett, K Williamson, M Hodsall, A Douglas, J DickinsonSubstitutes not used: C Marshall, K Carlington, T Mitchell, C Durham, T OttleyGoals: J Dickinson, 49Yellow cards: D SignorReferee: L WilsonMan of the match: R Bean (Village)
