Man sent to prison in Canada for two years for cocaine trafficking

A Bermudian man has been sentenced to two years and three months in jail after admitting trafficking cocaine in Canada.Odin Lowe, 29, of Happy Valley Lane, Pembroke, was arrested along with fellow Bermudian Sereana Brangman, after arriving in Toronto on a flight from Jamaica.They were due to board a flight onwards to Bermuda when they were detained by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on February 5.According to a spokeswoman for the RCMP, the case involves approximately one kilogram of cocaine.Although the RCMP does not give out street values for drugs, recent court cases in Bermuda indicate a kilogram of cocaine would be worth around $250,000 if sold in half-gram twists on the streets of Bermuda, or around $105,810 if sold by the ounce.The spokeswoman declined to detail the circumstances of the drug find.Lowe pleaded guilty to importing cocaine during a hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on April 8 and was handed a 27-month sentence, plus two months of pre-sentence custody.A charge of conspiring with Ms Brangman and unknown others to import cocaine was dropped.Ms Brangman, 28, from Crown Lane, Warwick, has yet to enter pleas to charges of conspiring with Lowe and others to import cocaine and importing it. However, her mother, Debbie Wilson, told The Royal Gazette her daughter maintains her innocence.She said on Wednesday: “I just got a call from Sereana today. She told me that they will be dropping the charges against her as there wasn’t any drugs found on her.”Ms Brangman, who is a single mother of three young children, is due in court this morning for a hearing. In the meantime her daughters and baby son are being cared for by family members.According to her Facebook page she is friends with Mr Lowe, who describes himself as a painter. Mrs Wilson said she had never heard of Mr Lowe prior to her daughter’s arrest.Ms Brangman’s father was Maxwell Brangman, who was murdered along with his friend Frederick Gilbert in St David’s in 2008. Teenager Darronte Dill was convicted in 2009 of killing the pair, who were homeless and living rough.
