Murray quick off the mark

fastest time bar chalked up a fine victory in the free-for-all as the harness racing season continued at Vesey Street on Sunday.

Terceira had the advantage of pole position but both Michael DeCosta, driving Eddie the Great and Eddie Roque with track record holder Shamrock Tuxedo came out of the gates fast making for an interesting challenge.

In the first heat Shamrock Tuxedo, starting in third hole, overtook Eddie the Great to finish second, but the second heat saw Eddie the Great hold his position immediately behind Jubilee, forcing Shamrock Tuxedo to run wide.

Shamrock ran out of steam on the home straight, leaving Jubilee to take first place honours and the Eddie the Great second.

In the junior free-for-all (second fastest time bar) the B division saw Abbies Casanova (Francis DeSilva) beat Grand Magic (Jospeh Viera) by a whisker after an exciting run down the home stretch.

The first heat of the junior A division ended with Custom Eyes'd (Michael DeCosta) winning comfortably. But in the second heat he broke the start gate allowing Bobby DeGraffe's Cracker Jack to take the lead all the way to the finish. An infringement by Michael DeCosta cost him second place as he was penalised for interference with Daniel Greenslade and Pondababe.

Ellie Wilson's Melody Time, driven by Jonnie Five, reigned supreme in the 1:12/2-1:13/4 bar, winning both heats over Hoe Down Don and Abby Dabby Doo.

David Mello and Paceway Debutante took full advantage of pole position to continue their winning streak, beating Maple Hill T-Bird and Motown Scott.

Other double heat winners were Trotacre Abby Lass (Eddie Moniz jr.), Todd's Ebony (Timmy Boyles) and Direct Toy Boy (Michael Roberts).

Meanwhile, Diamondway returned to the track on Sunday with a new driver -- Tony Adcock -- and a new gait. The pony raced last season at a pace, but requalified as a trotter and proceeded to win both heats against Jennaway and JB's Easter Prize who returned to the track after a long lay-off with new driver Katie Cook.

Another pony returning, after having a foal, was Misty's Little Dream with new driver Collin Mello. They finished second in the first heat but won the second in style, overtaking first heat winner Penny's Wildwood (Raymond Tucker) at the start.

Racing is again scheduled at Vesey Street this Sunday, starting at 1.00 p.m.
