Editor to step down in December

Bill Zuill, who has resigned as Editor of The Royal Gazette after 14 years in the post.

Royal Gazette Editor Bill Zuill yesterday announced he will step down from the post in December.Mr Zuill said he felt the time was right for a change after 14 years as Editor and he was looking forward to new challenges.Mr Zuill’s replacement will be announced in due course by the Board of Directors of The Bermuda Press (Holdings) Ltd, the owners of The Royal Gazette.While Mr Zuill was Editor, The Royal Gazette covered a series of national and international events, including the general elections of 2003 and 2007, Hurricane Fabian in 2003 and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 when the newspaper produced a special edition on the afternoon of the attacks.The newspaper also campaigned for greater access to information and press freedoms through the Right to Know campaign for a Public Access to Information Act and the landmark Bermuda Housing Corporation case before the Privy Council.The newspaper also helped to create the Media Council of Bermuda, which is the first self-regulating means for members of the public to bring complaints about media coverage to an independent panel.Mr Zuill has also played a leading role in developing www.royalgazette.com into the leading news and information website on the Island and one of the most popular websites in Bermuda overall.
