Pressure on security guards

Cup Match security guards will be under intense pressure next week knowing that any discovery of machetes and knives could lead to the owner being jailed for three years.

Marsha Andrews, owner of International Security and Fire, warned the public to take heed of the new law which is set to be signed off by the Governor by the time of the game.

Under the bill, which passed the Senate on Wednesday, the only excuse for having weapons will be for religious, sporting or work use or as part of a national costume.

Ms Andrews said her team picked up 56 dangerous weapons at last year?s Cup Match at Somerset including nine-ten inch knives. Many were brought for entirely innocent purposes such as picnics and people were able to pick them up at the end.

However this year anyone bringing knives will find themselves in deep trouble.

Ms Andrews said her team of eight security officers, who will be using metal detectors, will be aided by up to 55 Kiwani volunteers. She said those bringing prohibited items will be handed straight to the Police who will be at each gate.

Picnickers are urged to pre-cut and pre-dice food. Items such as kitchen knives, screw driver, tools, ice picks, pocket knives, Swiss army knives of any size are not permitted.

All items from chairs, coolers, umbrellas, hats, bags, blankets, purses, children?s bags, and strollers will all be examined said Ms Andrew.

She said: ?If it is carried it will be examined. If it walks it will be examined. ?After entering the grounds if you want to go off the St. George?s property you must come back through the detectors again every time.?

The Police will hold a Press conference regarding the Cup Match Holiday tomorrow.
