Way bounces back at Coral Beach
the face for the third time in two days, then roared back to capture two titles during the 66th Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club Invitational at the Coral Beach Tennis Club on Saturday.
First he came from a set down, staved off one match point, and broke his opponent for the first time in the match, to successfully defend his singles title by beating Greg Frigerio 2-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Ways in command at Coral Beach At the same time, Michael, along with brother Brian, gained local bragging rights when they quieted the previously loud voice of Stuart Smith, by claiming the Men's Open doubles crown with a straight sets 7-6, 6-4 victory over Smith and Mark Cordeiro, the defending champions.
While there was more pressure on the Way brothers in the doubles match, it was the singles contest that stole the day's spotlight. After losing the first set 2-6, Way found himself trailing 4-5, 30-40 in the second set. That is when he reached deep into his reserve strength box to win the next three points for his first break of the match. Way held and then really won the match when he fought from 0-40 down in the 12th game breaking Frigerio for only the second time in the match, to level the score at a set each.
That comeback drained the fight from Frigerio and Way roared off to a 5-2 advantage in the deciding third set from which his opponent never recovered.
While the singles title was a true classic, the doubles clash was the match that the packed gallery really came to watch. It was for bragging rights. Put up or shut up. As defending champions, Smith and Cordeiro felt they should have been seeded first over Michael and Brian. The Way brothers put up, which means that Smith and Cordeiro were shut up following their defeat, and a demoralising defeat it was.
The Way brothers, though coasting along with a 5-2 lead, found themselves on the defensive, and had to battle from a 6-4 deficit after losing four straight games, breaking Cordeiro in the 12th game when he was serving for the first set. They topped off their comeback by winning the tie break 7-5, even though they were trailing 5-2! "They never should have beaten us'' volunteered Smith. "It was a terrible match, though I have to give it to them, they played one hell of a match.'' In spite of everything, Smith felt that the turning point in the match came in the first set with Brian serving for the set at 6-5.
"I guessed that he would serve to my forehand, but they surprised us by serving to my backhand, and going `Australian', thus forcing me to give Michael an easy smash at the net for the first set. "After that it was all downhill.'' There were other highlights as local stalwart, Gill Butterfield, came away with her usual array of silverware, taking three titles on the day. She started the day by beating teenager Tara Lambert 6-1, 6-2 to take the Ladies singles. Butterfield then teamed with Jill Finnigan to defeat Kelly Holland and Heidi Boyle 6-3, 6-1 for the Ladies Open doubles event, and crowned her day when she and Alice Duff completed a three-set victory, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 over Gretchen Devlin and Nanny Vanneck in the Ladies 40 final that started the day before.
In one other final played on Saturday, Dick Mount captured the Men's 65 title when he defeated David Ragone 6-4, 6-1 in an All-American final.
With the completion of the BLTC Invitational on Saturday, the Coral Beach Club Invitational started its week-long series of matches yesterday.
