Ways back from the brink: BERMUDA BRIEFS
victory from third-seeded duo of Alex Anderson and Greg Frigerio, winning 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 in the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club Invitational at Coral Beach and Tennis Club yesterday.
With Anderson serving for the match at 6-5, he fell behind 40-0 but roared back with some power play to deuce, only to double-fault. This appeared to tear the spirit away from both Anderson and Frigerio as the Way brothers not only completed the break but won the tie-break 7-4 and then ran off six straight games to take the final set and the match.
The victory thus sets the stage for local bragging rights and gives the defending champions, Stuart Smith and Mark Cordeiro, a chance to put up or shut up. Smith and Cordeiro, as defending champions, felt they should have been seeded number one. Today, they will have the chance to state their case.
Meanwhile, veteran Vernal Davis completed a memorable week by capturing the men's 55 title with a straight sets victory over American David Schupp, winning 6-4, 6-3. Schupp started the match by breaking Davis, then holding for a 2-0 lead, but as it turned out that was to be the only time he would hold the lead during the 95-minute match.
The American brother/sister tandem of Ted Hoehn and Nancy Drake captured the Century Mixed crown when they upset the favoured defending champions Nanny Vanneck and Earl Leader 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Hoehn then teamed up with his brother, Drake, to defeat Steve Roiter and James Wilson 6-4, 6-2 in the men's 55 doubles final.
In two other finals, Georgiann Sutor upset local favourite Gill Butterfield 7-5, 7-6 to take the ladies 50s title while Irmgard Fishbacher captured the ladies 40s crown, beating the favoured Julie Lunn 6-1, 6-1.
MOTOCROSS HONOURS FOR AMERICANS SCR Motocross honours for Americans US riders Aaron Day and Patrick Profita swept the first round of motocross's two-round Memorial Day Mega Series at Coney Island on Wednesday.
And now the visitors will be looking to carry on where they left off when racing continues tomorrow.
Profita, an 80cc sensation, dazzled a large crowd at the track by totally dominating the local riders in all three motos. Local favourites, Steven Panchaud, Jimmy-Lee Weaver and Jakai Brimmer, were left to battle for second place honours.
In the 125 B class, Aaron Day outclassed every other rider on the track straight from the start. His superior technical display of riding skills left the crowd astonished.
Aaron's younger brother, Chris, finished the day third overall, tied on points with local favourite Robbie Smith. Day went down in the first two motos but was still able to finish second behind his brother in the final moto.
Aaron Pace finished second overall, two points ahead of Chris Day and Smith.
SOUSA RIDES TO TWO MORE WINS RAH Sousa rides to two more wins A good holiday crowd turned out for harness racing at Vesey Street on Wednesday where the action proved to be quite competitive and exciting on a fast, dry track.
Once again Colby Sousa drove Crunchtime to two more wins. Other double winners were Flame on (Tom Matthews) with Ponderbabe, Grandy Shady and Shamrock Formal Attire.
There were several four pony races which had the spectators on the edge of their seats. The second heat of the Junior Free for All saw Eddie Roque guide Shamrock Formal attire across the finish line just ahead of Jennifer Time.
Attire's time was 1:09.3 with Jennifer Time finishing in 1:09.4 and Nateway a close third.
Competition continues tomorrow with another interesting programme on tap with a total of 24 trotting breds racing.
Arthur Hurt's new pony Good Hands Charlie will be out for the first time since opening day while Canadian mare Runt's Rocket from Hang Um High Stables will be making her season debut.
