Man gets suspended sentence for disrupting Senate session

A 66-year-old man was found guilty yesterday of interrupting a Senate session by shouting obscenities.

Burnell Cross, of no fixed abode, called Attorney General Kim Wilson a "b***h" and accused her of stealing money from his mother.

Cross had entered the Senate Chamber on July 8 and, after sitting quietly for a few moments, shouted to Senator Marc Bean that he had something to talk to him about.

Sen. Bean told Cross to speak to him later, and Cross became quiet until Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Senator Kim Wilson entered the Senate chamber.

Cross then shouted repeatedly: "That b***h stole my mama's money."

Senate President Carol-Anne Basset warned Cross about his comments, and asked him to leave the chamber, but he refused, shouting at Sen. Bean: "You told me to f**k off. I'm letting you know. There's going to be a lot of action."

Sen. Bean then approached Cross asking him to leave, but Cross was uncooperative. Sen. Bean and a clerk escorted Cross out of the Senate Chamber, where Cross called Sen. Bean "(Premier) Dr. Brown's lackey and puppet."

In Magistrates' Court yesterday, Cross told Senior Magistrate Archie Warner: "You're judge, jury and executioner. I suggest you execute me."

Mr. Warner found Cross guilty of disturbing a house of legislature and sentenced him to three months imprisonment, suspended for 24 months.

Cross was released on his own recognisance, causing him to shout angrily: "So now you put me out on the street like a dog? I didn't just come here yesterday."
