Hall the hero as Colts make history
Penalty king Freddy Hall produced more Dudley Eve heroics as St George's Colts claimed their first ever First Division Dudley Eve cup in dramatic fashion at Somerset Cricket Club last night.
Hall catapulted his side to victory, saving two penalties while his teammates kept up their side of the bargain, missing only one as they beat Somerset Trojans 4-3 on penalties.
It was only fitting that a night of high drama should finish in such a fashion.
Trojans had already missed a controversial penalty, and had a last-gasp goal disallowed, before Hall's heroics.
As the game reached the mid-way point in the second half Jelani Butterfield was bought down around the area.
Confusion ensued, with many of the Colt's players insisting to the referee that the foul had been committed outside the area.
However after consulting with his assistant referee Edwards awarded the penalty.
Up stepped Trojans skipper Jelani Scott, who promptly blasted his 68th minute spot kick high over the bar and into the night sky.
"The linesmen saw what she saw, the referee saw what he saw, and I was close to observe it as well," said St. George's captain Jarreau Hayward.
"I thought he was outside the box, but that's how it goes.
"We are going back down the east to celebrate this moment, but this is the first of many for us so look out for St. George's from now on."
Colts might have had a penalty of their own moments earlier, when Jade Foggo appeared to be caught by Trojans goalkeeper Timmy Figuerido as he jumped for a header.
Referee Edwards however decided that there was no foul and awarded a goal-kick.
After Scott's miss there was still time for Trojans to claim the win, but Dwight Basden's goal in the dying moments of the game was ruled out for offside.
Then came Hall's turn, and it's not the first time in the competition that the young goalkeeper has been his side's hero, he also saved two against Somerset Eagles in the previous game.
"Freddy is the best goalkeeper on the Island so we knew he was going to save a few of them," said Hayward
"In training he saves them so we were confident going into the shoot-out we would be ok."
For the Trojans, and skipper Scott in particular, Hall, like his horror movie namesake Kruger, will haunt thier dreams for years to come.
Scott had a night he will want to forget, after missing the chance to win the game outright, he then saw Hall save his effort in the penalty shoot-out.
Hall wasn't the only player to have a good night for his side, Foggo proved to be a constant thorn in Trojans' side throughout the game and particularly early in the second half as they looked to turn the screws on their opponents.
Damon Darrell had a golden opportunity to put St. George's ahead in the 52nd minute, but too many touches allowed him to be closed down in the Trojans area.
Colt's were again pressing minutes later, when Neil Paynter lobbed a delicate free kick toward the back post for Foggo to run onto.
Foggo got a touch to Paynter's free-kick, while Figuerido seemed to have made contact with the winger as he came out to punch the ball.
In the end Hall proved to be the difference between the two sides.
"It was definitely a hard fought match, Somerset are a good team but we came focused," said Hayward.
"Pretty much the whole Island was against us except for a few people, but we knew our potential and came to play.
"Getting the extra days off to get ourselves ready and rested was vital," Hayward continued. "We were carrying a lot of injuries to key players, so it gave us time to recoup and sort out our strategy."
