St. George's retain school hoops title

annual Saltus/Bank of Butterfield Invitational Basketball Running Clock tournament when they defeated Mount St. Agnes in the final.

In round robin play, Saltus came out on top of Pool A with two wins while Berkeley were second with a win and a loss and Chaffee, playing in their last Running Clock tournament, third.

St. George's topped Pool B with two wins while MSA were second with a win and a loss and Warwick Academy third.

Chaffee and Warwick Academy played in the consolation final with Chaffee winning 14-11 leaving the top two teams from each group to battle for overall honours.

In the first semi-final St. George's and Berkeley produced the most exciting game of the tournament as Berkeley took an early lead and were up by five points at the half. They continued to dominate the game until the last two minutes when St. George's, led by captain Michael Smith, came alive.

Just seven seconds were left on the clock and Berkeley leading by three when St. George's, deep in their own half, gave the ball to Smith.

He dribbled to the three point line and with two defenders on him shot and coverted a crucial three-pointer to tie the game at 17-17 and force it into overtime with one second left.

St. George's won the jump ball and stalled until there were 15 seconds left in overtime before calling a time-out to give coach Anthony Peets a chance to organise the final shot.

The ball was again thrown in to captain Smith who stalled and then drove to the basket. With one second left he was fouled while shooting and he then converted both free throws to lead his team to the final for the second time.

The second semi-final saw MSA beat Saltus 28-17. In a fast-paced game, MSA took an early lead, one which Saltus never overcame. Captain Michael Duarte led the attack, scoring 15 of his team's 28 points. Saltus replied with three consecutive three-point conversions but still fell short.

A tired MSA team then struggled in the final as St. George's led from start to finish. Michael Smith again led his team, scoring 11 of the 18 points as St.

George's ran out comfortable 18-8 winners.

Smith, who got valauble assistance from team-mates Tori Gibbons, Robert Williams, Dion Burgess, Chris Pitcher, Dimitri Robinson, Anwar Darrell and Chukwuma Woods, was the high points player in the tournament with 39.
