Wolves urged to treat the Den as their safety net
John Barry Nusum, the Wolves striker, has urged his relegation-threatened side to make home advantage count with all four of their remaining matches to be played at Devonshire Recreation Club.
Nusum scored twice on his first appearance of the season for Wolves on Sunday, coming on as a second-half substitute, but could not prevent his team from slipping to a 5-2 defeat away to Flanagan’s Onions.
It leaves Wolves second from bottom, just one point above St David’s, with Nusum warning his team-mates to prepare for First Division football next season unless they start winning.
“We need to win, it is as simple as that,” the former Bermuda captain said. “None of the teams in the same position as us want to be there, but we must look to get results in the final four games.
“There can be an added incentive of staying up because no side wants to go down and go through the task of coming back up.”
Although the writing appears to be on the wall for Wolves, playing their remaining matches at their home ground could provide them with the boost that they need to reverse a poor run of form.
First up are back-to-back “six-pointers” against struggling Southampton Rangers on Sunday and St David’s the weekend after. “From what I have seen, our defence tends to spread apart and teams are finding holes, which leaves us on the back foot,” Nusum said.
“It’s always fun to play football, but to come on [against Onions] in the situation we were in was always going to be tough — but it is what is.”
Shedding light on his Wolves return last weekend, Nusum said that family and work commitments had prevented him playing as much as he would have liked.
“I have spoken to a few of the players throughout the course of the season and they say our defensive shape isn’t good,” he said. “I wanted to get back to playing but my fitness had to be right for me to play to my best.”
