Saltus to Saltus road race a great success

It's a hot and humid Sunday afternoon. Much of Bermuda's community is resting in the shade, however, many Saltus students, alumni and teachers are cheering on runners and washing cars in aid of the Bermuda Diabetes Association.

The annual 'Saltus to Saltus' race commenced at around 3.30 p.m. with approximately 230 people participating, with runners coming from Saltus Cavendish in Devonshire all the way to the St. John's campus, with teachers and students scattered strategically cheering for the runners and passing out water.

The questions on many passersby's lips were 'Why?' and 'What are these stands for?'

So we explained that our school was having a race to raise money for the Bermuda Diabetes Association.

From my perspective, helping out at these races fosters school spirit and helps people to be the change that they want to see in the community.

As I handed out water, the participants were continual reminders of why we do these events; why we as a school support so many different causes.

Personally I think it's because you make new friends or even meet people whom you wouldn't ordinarily have a chance to meet, people who have the same interests as you who are all looking to make a difference.

The winners of the race were Steve Hartwig taking first place for the adult males, Christine Westholm-Schroder as the first female adult, with the student winners being Sam Stan for the first male and Rachel Fox as the first female.

We are grateful to Mrs. DeSilva, who had previously been Head of Junior Department, Mrs. Banks, Miss Turner, and Ms Titterton, for organising this race and Ocean Spray in conjunction with Mrs. Terry Durrant for providing beverages for the end of the race.

Prizes ranged from trophies for the first four top runners to goody bags and gift certificates for the students, while Ms Sarah Burrows from the Bermuda Diabetes Association donated wrist bands and Frisbees for the participants.
