Tailenders steer Bay home

Bailey's Bay 140-7 (Bay's target revised to 136 in 34 overs because of rain) Dennis Pilgrim and Clarkie Trott guided Bailey's Bay to an exciting win at Wellington Oval, just when it seemed the east enders were poised for victory.

A heavy rain shower in mid-afternoon cut the St. George's innings short by 3.1 overs and delayed the start of Bay's innings by almost an hour.

Bay had the worst possible start when they lost openers Dennis Trott and Jermaine Warner in the first two overs. Tight bowling by St. George's then had them in further trouble at 70-6 before tailenders Pilgrim and Clarke took the fight to the St. George's bowlers with some big hitting.

First, Pilgrim and Irving Romaine rescued the visitors with an eighth wicket stand of 33 in seven overs which Pilgrim dominated as he hit two sixes off spinners Eugene Foggo and Travis Smith.

Then, after Romaine flicked a catch to Ben Phipps at square leg in the 28th over with Bay still 33 runs from victory, Pilgrim was content to play a supporting role as Trott smashed 14 runs off each of Graham Fox's next two overs, with two sixes in each, to give Bay victory with a couple of overs to spare.

Trott finished on 33 not out from just three overs, including four sixes and a four, while Pilgrim was unbeaten on 26 from two sixes and a four.

Ricky Hill hit a subdued 20 earlier in the innings after Dennis Trott was out first ball, hooking a short delivery from Herbie Bascome and skying a catch to wicketkeeper Dean Minors.

Warner then departed in the next over from Gregg Foggo as Bay were in early trouble at 2-2.

After a stand of 40 between Hill and Stephen Outerbridge (9), St. George's claimed wickets in the 13th, 15th, 17th and 21st overs -- all to Ryan Steede -- to put their neighbours on the ropes.

Steede, in his best bowling of the season, took four for 14 from seven overs while Herbie Bascome took two for 21 from seven and Gregg Foggo one for 22 off seven.

For St. George's Graham Fox hit three boundaries in his 35 not out while opener Dexter Smith scored 34, including three fours and three sixes. He and Mark Ray (21) added 49 for the first wicket in 10 overs before Bay fought back to have them 138-7. Gregg Foggo helped wag the tail with 14 in a stand of 29 for the eighth wicket with his cousin Graham Fox and 18 more came between Fox and Travis Smith before the rain came.

Pilgrim was the only Bay bowler to take more than one wicket, claiming three for 32 off 10 overs.

Devonshire Rec. 172 Warwick 101 The trio of Rudell Smith, Winston Trott and Monroe Darrell combined to take nine wickets and lead Devonshire Rec. to a 71-run victory over Warwick at Southampton Oval.

Smith was the chief wicket-taker, finishing with four for 22 off 9.4 overs while Trott had three for 36 off 10 overs and Darrell two for 19 off just four overs.

After losing their first two wickets cheaply, Warwick failed to get a decent partnership besides the 32 runs that Deon Stovell and Michael Stovell added for the fourth wicket. Deon scored 20 and Michael 28 not out.

Earlier Aldapo Fredericks struck 32 to lead Devonshire's bats. Michael Levon followed with 29 not out, skipper Wendell Swan and Omari Amory 17 apiece and Rudell Smith 14.

Veteran Hoyt Zuill led the Warwick bowlers with three for 53 off 10 overs while K.Butterfield and Reginald Pitcher each had two for 30 and Deon Stovell two for 33.

Cleveland 212 Flatts 167 Cleveland evened their league record at 2-2 with this 45-run victory over cross-town rivals Flatts at Devonshire Rec.

Veteran leg-spinner Johnny Richardson led the way for the victors, bagging four wickets and stunting Flatts in their chase for the target of 212.

Richardson removed the home team's last recognised batsman, Rahji Edness for 38, just as the skipper threatened to turn the table and with his dismissal went the team's hopes as they slumped to 167 all out.

Aiding Richardson in the bowling department was Merkell Smith with two wickets, while three others claimed one apiece.

Cleveland owed their total to the batting exploits of opening bat Curtis Jackson, who tallied 41, Aaron Adams' 38 and Smith's 40 at the tail end.

Derek Wright claimed three for 34 to emerge as the top bowler for the losers.

Police 326-7 PHC 175 (PHC's target reduced to 229 in 35 overs) PHC put some respectability in this defeat at Sea Breeze Oval, going down by 54 runs after being set a new target. Asked to score at 6.52 an over after Ferdinand Thorne led Police with a century, PHC replied with 175 runs in 30 overs at a rate of 5.83. Player-coach James Pace led the way for PHC with 32 in the middle order after the top three batsmen Alan Wilkinson, Kenny Mills and Kevin Dill gave them a good start.

Wilkinson (29) and Mills (28) put on 45 for the first wicket and the score advanced to 84 when Michael Jackman snatched two wickets in one over as Dill departed for 29. The only other batsman after Pace to reach double figures was Charles Symons with 22 as Dennis Archer claimed the last two wickets.

Richard Austin claimed four for 44, Archer two for 29 and Jackman two for 30.

Thorne stroked 15 fours and a six in his knock of 101. He added 75 for the second wicket with Terry Thomas and then put on a massive 125 for the third wicket with captain Stevie Lightbourne who scored 63.

Police had 210 on the board from 35 overs, adding 115 in the last 15 overs as Dennis Archer hammered a quick 31 in that time and Nyon Steede 23 not out.

Fast bowlers Kenny Phillip and Freston Hurdle helped keep the runs coming late in the innings with 18 each while at the top of the innings Dave Greenidge and Thomas scored 22 apiece.

Charles Symons claimed three for 53 to finish as the most successful PHC bowler.
