Browne sparkles in top-of-the-table clash
Teachers 30 Renegades 16 Teachers unveiled the latest weapon in their arsenal over the weekend with the introduction of speedster Nathan Browne to the first division.
And Renegades had no answer to the young wing who notched two tries and assisted in a third during this fight for first place in the division.
The teams banged heads with a series of quick attacks and counters in a game played at a furious pace.
It was Renegades who got on the board first with Phil Heaney kicking a penalty. But the Reds quickly replied after Browne passed inside to full back Mike Montgomery who danced around three tacklers on his way in for the try.
Ross Webber missed the conversion but continued Teachers' pressure gave him the opportunity to slot over a quick drop goal.
Reds stretched their lead when Scott Correia intercepted a stray Renegades pass and fed Webber who, in turn, passed to Browne who raced in to score his first try under the posts which Webber converted.
After the interval, Teachers seemed as if they were on the verge of self destruction as their 12-point lead began to slip away.
Heaney kicked his second penalty of the day and full back Neville Ross kept Renegades deep in Teachers' half of the field.
Teachers gave away a penalty on their goal-line and while they argued with the referee, quick thinking Renegade scrum half Stevie Given scooped up the ball and scampered over the line for the try.
But Teachers regained their composure and wing Heath Robinson turned on his soccer skills in a superb solo effort, chipping the ball ahead, racing around his opposite man to collect the ball before scoring. Webber converted.
Then the Reds put together their best move of the game with a fine team effort that saw the ball passed through several pairs of hands and into Browne's who outstripped the covering defence to score his second try.
Renegades would not give up and strong running by flanker Rod Stewart and Givens resulted in a try for centre Peter Hughes in the corner. But Teachers maintained their pressure and Webber kicked the final penalty of the game to seal the win.
Police II 26 Renegades II 14 Tries from Simon Carruthers, Neil Redbird, Dana George and Dave Bird left Renegades reeling in this second team encounter on Saturday.
Police captain Ian Jamieson added three conversions in his side's winning effort while Renegades' centre Robert Stubbs and full back Mark Watlington replied with a try each. Watlington also added two conversions.
Mariners II 27 Teachers II 5 Mariners hammered a lacklustre Teachers side in almost every phase of this game. Two tries each from Greens' young wing Nick Van de Weg and flanker Keith Hodgkins coupled with a try and a conversion from fly half Ken Anderson gave Mariners their points while full back Daniel Morgan was responsible for Teachers' score.
