Trott's eight-year exile is over
receiving medical treatment, Albert Steede will continue on as Bermuda's captain.
Steede took over the captaincy during the tour of Barbados and will remain in charge for the Derbyshire tour, which start on Sunday. He is also likely to lead the team in Bermuda's second match against the English county team on Saturday, April 3.
"Right now I'm only looking at the present, I don't know if it's permanent or in the interim,'' said Steede yesterday. "I'm looking forward to the upcoming tour with Derbyshire.
"I'm taking it one day at a time. I'm very enthusiastic about it and can't wait to perform.'' Smith's knee has been slow in responding to treatment and he may need to travel overseas to have the knee checked further. He expects to miss the first couple of months of the season, which could also include the two-match tour by Pakistan in early May.
The Bermuda squad of 13 for Sunday's match at Somerset contains three players who did not travel to Barbados earlier this month.
Two players overlooked are pacemen Dale Fox and Gary Brangman whose bowling actions came under close scrutiny in Barbados. Also left out is Kenny Phillips who did not play after the first match in Barbados while Andre Manders has been overlooked after failing to produce with the bat.
Returning to the team are paceman Terry Burgess and wicket-keeper/batsman Roger Trott, who is back after eight years. Under-25 team captain Glenn Smith is also in the squad of 13 for the Bermuda game.
Steede welcomes the return of Burgess who will share the new ball with Anthony Edwards. "Terry and `Pacer' are the best two openers we have,'' Steede said.
Trott comes in to take over the wicket-keeping duties in the absence of Allan Douglas who is sticking by his decision to retire. Douglas travelled to Barbados in the absence of overseas student Dean Minors, whose future availability is uncertain because of a serious knee injury.
"I'm thrilled and probably more excited about playing for Bermuda this time than I was the first time,'' said Trott, 28, yesterday.
He last appeared for Bermuda against Canada in a triangular tournament here, which also involved the United States.
"It's hard to put into words how excited I am. It should be every player's dream to represent his country.'' Trott's return to the Bermuda team could be a short one, though, as his religious beliefs will not allow him to play on the Saturday when Bermuda take on the English county team in the fourth match of the six-match tour.
The depth of the squad's batting suggests that Glenn Smith and Jermaine Outerbridge will miss out on selection with Del Hollis carried as the sixth bowler and second spinner behind Arnold Manders.
Smith will lead the Under-25 team against the visitors next Tuesday, which may be moved to Somerset CC instead of original venue Devonshire Rec.
Outerbridge is the third Under-25 member named in the senior national team.
