Icc trophy selections raise debate
Monday night at a lengthy, Bermuda Cricket Board of Control meeting as experience was retained in the list of 16 for Kenya in January.
"The meeting got out of hand,'' said one unnamed source yesterday in reference to the response to the squad, who contained the names of Noel Gibbons, Arnold Manders, Clevie Wade, Ricky Hill, Allan Douglas and Jeff Richardson.
And while BCBC president Ed Bailey could not be reached to confirm the 16, two sources at the meeting disclosed that Albert Steede, who met with the selectors on Saturday at Somerset Cricket Club to chose the squad, was named to captain the team for the first time.
Steede gets the post over Wendell Smith, who many thought would regain the position he held before an injury earlier this year.
"There are going to be more meetings,'' said one source, which suggests the squad is yet to be rubber-stamped.
Bailey's Bay fast bowler Anthony Braithwaite was apparently chosen in the original squad of 16 but there was so much objection to his inclusion that his name was taken off the list.
Braithwaite was not part of the squad of 30 that was chosen to train though he did publicly express his desire to play for Bermuda shortly after his exploits in the Eastern Counties Cup final, which led Bailey's Bay to victory over St.
David's.
"There was a lot of heated discussion and I'm of the opinion that another meeting is going to be held,'' said the source who asked not to be named.
"There were a lot of unhappy people.'' As expected, the squad included young prospects Clay Smith and Lionel Cann, though there were no places for promising young batsman Glenn Smith, wicket-keeper Dean Minors and Olin Jones.
Instead, six members of the 1990 squad that failed miserably in Holland -- Hill, Gibbons, Wendell Smith, Anthony Edwards, Manders and Douglas -- are back to form the nucleus of the team while Clevie Wade and Charlie Marshall have returned after missing the last tournament.
The spin responsibilities will be carried by off-spinner Del Hollis and leg-spinner Bruce Perinchief. There are no places in the squad for spinners David Adams and Wayne Richardson nor attack bowlers Terry Burgess and Allan Brangman, who made his Bermuda debut earlier this year.
The pace attack, admittedly the weakness in the team, will be shared by Edwards and Kenny Phillips with back-up coming from a host of medium-pacers, including three of the four all-rounders -- Gibbons, Cann and Wade -- with Manders supporting the spinners with his off-breaks.
The squad will contain three specialist openers, with Allen Richardson, who turns 36 next month, coming in for his first ICC and adding support for Hill and Wendell Smith.
There has been little to gauge selection on, other than form from the past season, with training sessions limited to gym work once a week. There was only one practice match with the other, on Saturday, not played because just 15 players showed up at Royal Naval field.
Squad (not confirmed): Albert Steede (captain), Wendell Smith, Ricky Hill, Clay Smith, Allen Richardson, Jeff Richardson, Charlie Marshall, Arnold Manders, Noel Gibbons, Lionel Cann, Clevie Wade, Anthony Edwards, Allan Douglas, Kenny Phillips, Bruce Perinchief, Del Hollis.
ANTHONY BRAITHWAITE -- Name came up.
ALBERT STEEDE -- This scene with Devonshire Rec. and Bermuda team-mate Bruce Perinchief could easily be duplicated in Kenya.
