Butterfield and Wellman hold Island's best hopes

Triathlete Tyler Butterfield and triple jumper Brian Wellman are likely to be Bermuda's best medal prospects at the Commonwealth Games.

This view came from Vice-President of the Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA) Michael Cherry last night as the organisation announced the names of 25 who will represent the Island at next month's Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England.

"We feel we have a good all-round team that will represent Bermuda with honour and that will perform to the best of their ability. We are not expecting to come home with many, if any, medals but we do have some who could potentially medal.

"We would probably be looking in the triathlon for Tyler Butterfield and, in the triple jump, Brian Wellman is quite capable of bringing home a medal."

Other top names in local sport who have been summoned to national duty in this stellar competition, held every four years among countries once or still under British rule, are cyclists Kris Hedges, Geri Mewett, Steve Millington, Melanie Claude and Julia Hawley; squash players Nick Kyme and Tommy Sherratt; swimmers Ronald Cowen, Graham Smith, Roy-Allan Burch and Kiera Aitken; triathletes Karen Smith and Kent Richardson and sprinter Xavier James.

"We are sticking strictly to those who qualified by meeting the pre-decided standards within the time frame," said Cherry firmly, when asked if any consideration was given to persons who were on the threshold of qualification.

The main group of Bermuda's contingent will leave here around July 20 but many of them will arrive at the Games Village in Manchester at different times as they are likely to continue training elsewhere until the eve of the Games.

"Most of the athletes will be off training before the Games and as many as possible will be doing their final preparation in England to acclimatise," said Cherry.

Decisions as to where persons in various disciplines will train in their final build-up are reside with the national associations for the respective sports.

Sixteen officials will accompany Bermuda's competitors to the Games along with Chef de Mission Philip Guishard and physiotherapist Glen Robinson.

No team captain has been named and it is yet to be determined who will be given the signal honour of carrying Bermuda's flag in the Opening Ceremony.
