Tyler lifts Canadian tri title

Bermuda, outdistanced some of Canada's top competitors in winning a President's Choice Triathlon Series event in Guelph, Ontario, on the weekend.

Feeling right at home in the hot, humid conditions, Butterfield not only won his age group but beat out a total of 316 triathletes in the 750-metre swim, 20K bike and 5K run.

His time of 59 minutes and 26 seconds -- including a 17:16 clocking over a hilly run course -- was more than a minute faster than the second-place finisher.

Bermuda's Brian Steinhoff placed eighth.

Butterfield was one of more than two dozen members of Tri-Hedz, the Island's junior triathlon club, to make the trip. They were joined by coach Neil de Ste Croix and seven other Bermuda adults who competed.

But it was the kids' show all the way, as Raishun Burch, Coyatito Smith, Shannon Dyer and Flora Duffy all won age group titles.

Butterfield also teamed up with Nick Taylor and Mark Morrison the next day to win the team event in the Ontario Championships, an Olympic-distance event (James Brooks, Steinhoff and Chris Conway were second).

De Ste Croix, Kevin Tucker, Kent Richardson and Laurie Orchard competed in the individual event, with Orchard's fifth-place showing in the women's 25-29 age group the best finish and Tucker's 2:10:42 the best time among the men.

Burch and Smith won their titles in the Kids of Steel event, a 100-metre swim, 3K bike and 1K run. Burch clocked 16:02 in the boys 7-8 age group to beat team-mate Timothy Fox, while Smith's 13:15 in boys' 9-10 was only a second faster than Tyler Abbott.

Dyer and Duffy were tops in the Super Sprint, which consisted of a 375 metre swim, 10K bike and 2.5K run. Dyer led a Bermuda sweep of the top five in boys under-13 with his 37:56 clocking.

Duffy beat team-mate Ashley Kirkpatrick by 30 seconds with her time of 43:22 in the girls' under-13.

Other juniors taking part were Oliver Kempe, Simon Morrison, Chloe Kempe, Jennifer Baikie, Lawson Williams, Geoffrey Smith, James Adams, Matthew Jones, Spencer Conway, Melissa DeSilva and Robyn Dickinson (who finished her girls 13-15 event despite a bike accident).

Adults in the sprint events were de Ste Croix (third in men's 30-34), Dave Morrison, Charles Duffy, Carolyn Conway, Jay Kempe and Jackie Stevenson.
