Augustus grabs early lead in Junior Classic
Talented teen golfer Daniel Augustus is leading the senior division of the inaugural Ross (Blackie) Talbot Junior International Classic after a firing a four-over-par 74 at Tucker?s Point yesterday.
The 18-year-old, no stranger to prestigious junior competitions having competed on the International Junior Golf Tour last year, holds a one shot lead over another Bermudian, Camiko Smith, while Jarryd Dillas, who placed sixth in the Bermuda Amateur Strokeplay Championships last month, is in third after carding a seven-over 77 which included a triple bogey on the par-five third.
Augustus? round was a distinctly up and down affair, as he recorded two double bogeys and four bogeys to go along with four birdies and only seven pars ? though this inconsistency was not ultimately to set him back.
The highest placed overseas visitor in the boys? 18-20 division was American Langdon Christian from Virginia, although he is sitting a massive nine shots off the lead having put together a round of 83 on an unfamiliar course.
Foreign golfers, however, held sway in the boys? 15-17 division as another American, Adam Lewicki from Connecticut, moved into a two-shot lead over Texan John Burch, the duo shooting 74 and 76 respectively.
Bermudian Garrett Lowe is three shots off the lead in third having carded a 77 while Cornell Bean jr is in fourth after an eight-over 78.
Lewicki, who is entering his senior year at high school and is looking into the possibility of golfing scholarships at colleges like Princeton, said he was pleased to be leading after 18 holes despite not having played his best.
?I really hit the ball quite poorly all day ? but as I?m leading at the moment I?ll take that as a good sign,? he said.
?It?s a very beautiful golf course and if anything some of the views can actually be quite distracting.?
Elsewhere, there was some impressive scoring in the boys? 12-14 division off the white tees, with American Charlie Von Arentschildt from Connecticut equalling the low round of the day with a 74, only one shot better than the second-placed local Alex Osborne.
Two more Bermudians, Joshua Cabrera (78) and Ryan Roberts (80) lie in third and fourth respectively.
Only two girls ? both from the US ? are taking part in the Classic, with Megan Jones (82) leading the way by one shot over Kaylin Terry.
