Port Royal ready for its official unveiling

After 18 months, $14million, countless arguments, and not a little politicking, Port Royal Golf Course will officially open this month.

A two-day celebration of the Island's golfing flagship will begin with an evening reception on July 21, and the inaugural Captain's Choice Tournament the next morning.

The great and the good, from at home and abroad, will be present for the opening, which will be hosted by Premier Dr Ewart Brown.

"Now that all 18 holes are open at Port Royal, the rave reviews are rolling in," said Dr Brown.

"I think the time is right to let golfers know – here in Bermuda and overseas – that a completely renovated Port Royal is open for business and ready to take its claim as one of the world's finest public golf courses.

"Bermuda now has five great golf courses including the new Port Royal, Mid Ocean and Tucker's Point and is now arguably the finest island golf destination in the world."

Among those attending from abroad is former Cincinnati Bengal, and NFL Hall of Famer, Boomer Esiason.

The quarterback hosts a sports radio show in New York and organisers are hoping he will spread the word about Port Royal.

"Boomer Esiason is a big name with a big audience and we look forward to hosting him later this month at Port Royal.

"We have a great golf course to show off to the world and Boomer will help us get the message out to sports fans," said William Griffith, the Director of Tourism.

The quarterback turned broadcaster has also created an original blog called "Boom-uda Shorts" for text and video posts from Bermuda. Esiason will also use his Facebook page for Bermuda-relevant updates.

Re-developing Port Royal has included re-routing two holes, construction of new bunkers, the installation of a reverse osmosis plant, a computerised irrigation system and the planting of Tif Eagle on redesigned greens.

The highlight however is the lengthening of the course's par-three 16th. At 235-yards, the course's signature hole, which clings to the side of the cliff above Whale Bay, will prove a test for even the most accomplished golfer

Casuarina tress have been replaced by indigenous Bermuda Cedar trees opening up the course which has been lengthened to 6,842 yards, making it the longest golf course in Bermuda.

The Grand Opening of Port Royal will take place when Port Royal hosts the 27th PGA Grand Slam of Golf October 19th-21st, 2009. The event will be televised to an audience in 100 countries.
