Hundreds of children responded to the Red Cross hurricane colouring contest

During May, Ann Spencer-Arscott, director of the Bermuda Red Cross, coordinated a hurricane preparedness page of cartoons by Peter Woolcock which was distributed to all Island primary schools.

Some 5,520 pages were sent and about 1,121 were returned and first, second and third prizes and honourable mentions were awarded for children age five to 11 years of age.

The judges were artist, Peter Woolcock, Deborah Turner, from BELCO, Lisa Bardgett from the Phoenix Stores and Ann Spencer-Arscott.

There was a prize presentation and reception at the Bermuda Red Cross headquarters on Berry Hill Road on Wednesday, May 31, at 3:30 with all the winners present to receive their prizes and to enjoy the reception.

The first prize winners received $20 gift certificates from the Phoenix Stores.

The contest was sponsored in part by Pronto Print through a discount on the printing and by BELCO who covered the costs of the printing and the artwork.

Frank Gamble, previous director of the Bermuda Red Cross and Colin Young, chairman of the Bermuda Red Cross Board were present at the prize presentation. Bob Di Giacomo from Pronto Print attended.

Also present were Helen Wicks and Wilma Frith, the office staff who assisted in getting the contest off the ground and put to bed.
