Driver in fatal crash was on day release from Co-Ed Facility

The 17-year-old boy driving the bike on which Krystle (Maya) Babon was a passenger when she was killed on Saturday night is facing disciplinary action at the Co-Ed Facility, Prisons Commissioner Hubert Dean revealed yesterday.

However, Police remained tight-lipped on whether Jay Cody Steede will be facing any charges in court after the 15-year-old girl?s tragic road death. As of last night he had not yet been charged with any offences.

Steede, who is serving a term of corrective training at the Co-Ed Facility, was on day-release on Saturday, a normal procedure for his grade, Mr. Dean said. Steede was signed over to his mother with a curfew to be back at the Co-Ed Facility by 7 p.m. Saturday night ? however, at 5.15 the facility received a report saying his mother could not find him.

At 10.15 p.m. the accident occurred on Harbour Road. A witness said Steede fled the scene, while the Police reported he was later arrested on Keith Hall Road under suspicion of impaired driving.

?He was not supposed to be riding any vehicle at all,? Mr. Dean told yesterday. Disciplinary action will be taken against the young man for breaking curfew and operating a vehicle, he said ? ?but that?s minor compared to what he could be facing?.

Mr. Dean said he has not yet seen Steede, who suffered minor bruising and a suspected fractured wrist in the incident. His assistant has seen the young man, however. Describing Steede?s ?functionality? as ?rather low?, Mr. Dean said it was hard to determine how he was feeling. ?We?re not even clear he?s fully aware what?s going on.

?We are waiting to see exactly what the Police will do regarding charges.?
