Police: In the event of a hurricane, plan ahead

Police have warned households living in low-lying areas near the coast to plan escape routes in the event of a major hurricane this summer.

In a media advisory released by the Bermuda Police Service, a spokesman said the best preparation is information.

"Make prior arrangements to move to another location or higher ground in case evacuation becomes necessary," the spokesman said.

"When moving, take into consideration the fact that some roads may become impassable due to storm surge before the hurricane hits."

Coastal residents will be informed of evacuations by an emergency radio station located at 100.1 FM.

It will start its broadcast six to 12 hours before the anticipated arrival of a hurricane, with up-to-date information provided directly to the commercial radio news stations.

"In the event that the commercial radio news stations are unable to transmit, the Emergency Broadcast station itself will begin direct transmission to the local area," the statement said.

Police recommend purchasing the following emergency supplies: hammer and nails, a good length of rope, a pair of pliers, some plastic sheeting or tarpaulin, masking tape, batteries, a bucket, flashlights, candles and matches, and a non-electric stove.

It is important to have a portable FM radio with spare batteries and storing plenty of tinned or dried foods in the cupboard is a good idea.

Decide which room in the house will be "your strong room" and ensure your boat is secured. Checking on neighbours before and after the storm, especially the elderly or infirm is also advised.

"When a hurricane is imminent, fill containers with fresh water," the statement said. "Bring animals inside or let them roam freely, so that they can find their own shelter. Park your car in a safe place."
