Millington pips Games partners in tight finish
Cyclists resumed racing on Sunday morning at Southside, St. David's, and the pace was as hot as the temperature as the top riders and triathletes who have been selected for the Commonwealth Games in Manchester next month put on a show of strength to dominate the one-hour criterium event.
In a tight finish it was Steve Millington who came away with the spoils after he had been pushed all the way.
After an action packed start to the race which saw riders attacking off the front, it was clear that it was not going to be a race for the faint of heart.
The first serious move came from Millington who burst out of the pack to open up a lead on the rest of the field, which he held for almost two laps of the circuit race before triathlete Tyler Butterfield started to reel him in with Kent Richardson, Melanie Claude and Julia Hawley all paying close attention.
Just as Millington was about to be caught, his team-mate Greg Hopkins attacked and was quickly joined by Hawley, Claude and veteran Mike Lee as the tight rein on the race was finally broken with the four riders quickly opening up a lead on the main pack who were clearly marking Butterfield and Millington's every move.
As the four riders extended their lead, Millington, Butterfield and Richardson decided enough was enough and eventually broke from the pack and worked tirelessly together until they joined the four leaders with about 20 minutes of the race remaining.
With such a powerful lead group working to keep the pace high, the leaders lapped the field and all that was left to be decided was who would have the strongest finish.
With one lap to go, Butterfield took the initiative and attacked off the front but as they made the final turn onto the finishing straight Millington powered to the front to take the honours with Richardson, Claude, Hopkins, Hawley and Lee in close contention.
In the chase pack, Damion Wilson broke off the front of the group, with Gino Crofton next, out-sprinting Earl Godfrey, Kevin Tucker and Chris Conway to win the category three event.
Vic Ball continued to dominate the veterans category in his 45-minute race, beating out Ian Fox and Steve Petty.
In other categories, Sharon Fenn won the women's veterans, Michael Dyer put in another strong performance among the men's novices, Melissa DeSilva won the women's novices, Geoffrey Smith the 15-16 boys, Matthew Godfrey the 13-14 boys, Tim Fox the 11-12 boys, Michael Coles the 10 and under boys and Claire Hawley the 10 and under girls.
