St. Louis move into top spot
Bermuda Goodwill Tournament at the halfway mark.
After Tuesday's thunderstorms forced the second round to be postponed, the 101 teams met near perfect conditions on the four courses yesterday when the tournament resumed on the day which had been set aside for the professional tournament.
The St. Louis team, led by professional Steve Spray, followed up their 62 at Port Royal on Monday with a 57 at Belmont, good enough to break a four-way tie for top spot.
They now lead Atlanta National Golf Club by one stroke on 119 while a further stroke back are three clubs, Loch Lomond of Dunbartonshire, Scotland, Sharon Country Club of Sharon, Massachusetts and Schuyler Meadows of Londonville, New York.
Atlanta, with Gordon Leslie as their pro, added a 61 yeterday at Mid Ocean to stay in contention while Loch Lomond, who like Atlanta have played at Belmont and Mid Ocean, shot a net 62 yesterday.
Schuyler Meadows carded an impressive 60 at Port Royal which should give them a boost for their rounds at Castle Harbour and Mid Ocean.
Also perfectly placed are Sharon, who are still to play at Belmont, considered the least demanding of the four courses.
Defending net champions Metuchen Golf and Country Club from New Jersey are further down the standings on 126 following a 59 at Castle Harbour.
The top local team is Ocean View, one of seven tied on 123 overall. Ocean View added a 60 to their opening round at Mid Ocean with a 63 yesterday at Castle Harbour. They are led by top pro Dwayne Pearman, Dave Purcell, Andre Dill and Leon Williams. A further two strokes back is St. George's Golf Club, led by Kim Swan and including Maxwell Curtis, Zane DeSilva and Douglas Morris.
TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM -- Veteran Ed Whalley (centre) was ruled out of the Goodwill Tournament with an injured hand but that didn't stop him from lending moral support to team-mates (from left Jim Robbins, Steve Bassett, Bill McDonough and Bob Young) at Port Royal yesterday.
