Ganga?s father robbed at gun point

The father of Trinidad skipper Daren Ganga was robbed at gun point in a diner in his native Barrackpore while celebrating his son?s seventh regional century last Sunday.

Bahadur Ganga and six others, among them two police officers, were held up by bandits at the Small Wall?s Diner only hours after his son struck a magnificant 161 against Windward Islands to increase his chances of retaining his spot in the West Indies team ahead of incoming tours by Zimbabwe and India this summer.

The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. in which the robbers made off with more than $8,000 in cash and $20,000 in jewellery, according to Police.

Ganga (Sr) was said to have been toasting his son?s recent success with the bat when the bandits struck.

?I couldn?t see their faces as I was sitting on the side,? Ganga recalled. ?They pulled out guns and told everybody to put their wallets on the table.

?Everything happened so fast.?

The incident soured what had initially been another proud moment for the Ganga family and Trinidad as a whole as their regional cricket team advanced to this week?s Carib Beer Shield Final against Barbados slated for Guaracara Park.

Trinidad took only 45 minutes on Monday to mop up the Windward Islands? tail, and apply the finishing touches to a mammoth 391-run win at Guaracara Park on the fourth and final day?s play of the Carib Beer Shield semi-final.

Speaking to shortly afterwards, skipper Ganga stated: ?We are all hungry for success and really want the Shield title badly.?

Such is Trinidad?s craving for success, champion batsman Brian Lara returned to his native homeland on Tuesday night to join the team in their preparations for the upcoming five-day final that commences on Saturday at Guaracara Park, 30 minutes away from Bermuda?s senior national team?s training base at the Frank Worrell Development Centre.

?He (Lara) has already indicated to us that he would be joining the team and will be with the rest of the guys in camp from Wednesday,? Trinidad manager Omar Khan confirmed.

Earlier this year Trinidad won the Carib Beer Series, their first four-day championship in 21 years.

Now skipper Ganga has set his focus on winning an unprecedented double.

?We are aware that winning the double has never been achieved by this country and this current bunch wants to change that,? the West Indies opening bat added.
