Brown unhappy despite Cougars win over Hood
Devonshire Cougars 2 Robin Hood 1Dennis Brown described Devonshire Cougars’ performance against Robin Hood as “poor in every department” despite seeing them climb to the top of the Premier Division.Cougars appeared lethargic and disinterested throughout last night’s match at Devonshire Rec., with Brown taking little satisfaction from the display other than the final result. The Big Cats took the lead in the 17th minute through striker Jamie Smith who burst down the right-hand channel before unleashing a right-footed strike from the edge of the box. However, Hood, hit back almost immediately when David Outerbridge powered home a long distance strike that gave Cougars goalkeeper Che Clarke little chance.Hood were giving as good as they got but conceded just before half-time when Domico Coddington pounced on a rebound after goalkeeper Jason Simons had parried Chris Caisey’s effort.Brown insisted his side needed to improve if they were remain in the title race until the business end of the season, but had no doubt they would improve as the season progresses.“This was a poor performance tonight,” said Brown. “Our decision-making was poor, our defending was poor, our football intelligence was poor and we missed chances.”The former Somerset Trojans coach put his team below par display down to complacency, believing newly promoted Hood would be a soft touch.“We were very complacent tonight; we never really got started.“For some reason I think the players thought this would be an easy game,” said Brown.“Maybe because Hood are a newly promoted team we thought it wouldn’t be a difficult game.“We made it difficult for ourselves tonight because we never really got going.“I have no doubt we will improve and we simply have to if we’re going to challenge for the top spot.”Although Hood remained in the game until the final whistle, Cougars created sufficient chances to kill the game off long before referee Anthony Francis blew for full-time.Cougars skipper Kwame Steede was the chief culprit, missing two gilt-edge opportunities either side of the interval. On the stroke of half-time, Steede found himself bearing down on Simon’s goals but showed an uncharacteristic lack of composure, firing wildly wide of the right-hand post. Then, midway through the second half, the midfielder latched onto a Lejuan Simmons through ball but again skewed his shot horribly wide of the goal from just yards out.Simmons also squandered another opening early in the second period when he embarked on a mazy dribble into the Hood box before shooting tamely at substitute keeper Kenan Robinson.Devonshire Cougars: C Clarke, S Pearman, K Tucker (J Butterfield, 39), K Franks, Z White, Moses Steede, D Coddington (M Douceat, 72), L Simmons, J Smith (J Seymour, 58), C Caisey, K SteedeSubstitutes not used: Mark Steede, D LambeRobin Hood: J Simons (K Robinson, 45), T Terceira, S Simons, J Crockwell, A Wolffe, J Duffy, A Nelson, D Bascome, D Outerbridge, D Bell, T LovinzSubstitutes not used: D Mallory, M HuntReferee: A FrancisMan of the match: C Caisey (Cougars)
