Darronte Dill to be sentenced on January 29
Double-murderer Darronte Dill will be sentenced for killing Maxwell Brangman and Frederick Gilbert on January 29.
Dill, 19, was convicted by a jury on December 16 of killing the homeless friends as they slept in a hut in St. David's in September 2008.
He was remanded into custody after the verdict and his next court date was fixed during a brief administrative hearing at Supreme Court yesterday afternoon.
On that date, the trial judge, Chief Justice Richard Ground will set the minimum prison term Dill must serve before he can apply for parole.
Yesterday also saw a number of other criminal cases dealt with during the monthly arraignment session, including that of murder-accused Jermaine Pearman, who will stand trial on June 21.
Pearman, 36, of no fixed abode, is charged with the premeditated killing of 23-year-old prison officer Shakeya DeRoza the mother of two young children by him.
She collapsed and died in front of Rose's Flower Shop in Middle Road, Sandys, after succumbing to multiple injuries sustained on July 10 2009.
In addition to the murder charge, Pearman is further accused of possessing a knife with a seven-inch blade on the Railway Trail in Sandys the location where he was apprehended after the incident.
He pleaded not guilty during an earlier court appearance.
In another matter, Gregory Outerbridge, 28, pleaded not guilty to possessing a gun and ammunition in York Street, St. George's, on September 12, 2009.
Outerbridge, of Jacob's Point, St. George's, is said to have had a Ruger P90 semi-automatic pistol and six hollowpoint rounds. He pleaded not guilty, and was remanded into custody, pending a trial set to begin on March 2.
Also mentioned was the case of Earl Ingemann, 21, Rasheed Muhammad, 21, and Marico Bassett, 19, accused of a machete attack at the Flatts Village barbershop on November 28 2008. As reported in yesterday's edition of The Royal Gazette, Ingemann, a heart transplant survivor, died on Saturday as the result of a New Year's Day car crash.
Director of Public Prosecutions Rory Field told yesterday's hearing that the Crown had not had time to submit documentation halting proceedings against Ingemann in the light of his death.
The allegations against the trio, from Sandys, accuse them of wounding Al-Rashid Ebbin with intent to do him grievous bodily harm in the incident. Mr. Ebbin is married to Ingemann's mother. They denied the charge during a court appearance in July 2009.
They further denied possessing a machete, baseball bat, penknife and incapacitant spray on the same date and Ingemann denied misusing telephone facilities during November 2008 through uttering menacing words. The case had been delayed from proceeding to trial due to Ingemann's ill-health prior to the crash that claimed his life.
Prosecutor Cindy Clarke said after yesterday's hearing that a decision on what should happen regarding the case against Muhammad and Bassett is still pending. They were bailed until the next arraignment session on February 1.
In another case, two men accused of conspiring to import cannabis pleaded not guilty. Lionel Thomas Jr, 28, of Cove Valley Road, St. George's and Jermaine Outerbridge, 38, of Fisherman's Hill, Hamilton Parish, are alleged to have been involved in the plot between an unknown date and November 12 2008.
They are set to go on trial on May 3 and were bailed in the meantime.
A man accused of burgling a Court Street furniture store and then setting fire to the premises will go on trial on March 15. Neil Trott, 41, of no fixed abode, denies targeting the shop, Auction De Mitra and Shiraz Galeria, on June 6 2009, stealing an antique roulette table in the process. He was bailed until that date.
The matter will be mentioned again at next month's arraignment session.
