Man accused of supplying cocaine to nursery teacher

The trial of a man accused of supplying cocaine to an on duty nursery school teacher began in Supreme Court yesterday.

Wilston Ezekial Davis, 43, of Somerset Road, Sandys, is accused of supplying cocaine to Cindy Augustus on June 5, 2003.

The court heard yesterday from Customs Officer, Kelly Trott who said that she and another Customs officer along with four Police detectives staked out Vernon Temple Childcare Centre in Southampton where Augustus worked as a nursery school teacher.

Ms Trott described the sequence of events she witnessed from the unmarked van she and the officers were in.

She said she took position on Hawthorn Lane at 11.35 in the morning and about 15 minutes later she saw a man on a bike come into the nursery school grounds.

She noticed he had a Smiths shopping bag between his legs. She said the children were inside but Augustus came out and greeted him and he gave her the Smiths bag.

They spoke for a while and then he removed his helmet, went to the nearby eatery, which gave her a full view of his face and body.

Ms Trott said that Augustus rested a box on the seat of the bike before the rider had returned.

She added that once the rider returned Augustus came back out, had a short conversation, they kissed, he put his helmet on and rode away.

Ms Trott followed the rider and obtained his licence plate number AR269. She said she tried to continue but soon lost sight of him and returned to her post on Hawthorn Lane.

She mentioned that there was another surveillance van parked at Heron Bay Primary School.

Bradlyn Van-Lowe, supervisor of the nursery school, said that Augustus had worked at the school for three years but that she was ?not really familiar with her personal details?.

She said she had two young children, one of whom attended the nursery.

She said at times she observed people coming to the nursery to visit Augustus.

These included her parents, a man in a truck and a friend whom she knew as ?Buck?.

She said she had not seen ?Buck? more than two or three times and only ever with his helmet on. She said she had seen him twice on the porch and once at the door of the school.

She said she was on duty the day of the alleged incident and was changing a baby when she saw two men come into the nursery and take Augustus outside. As she was about to ask who they were, one of the men introduced himself as a Police Officer. She said this happened between noon and 1 p.m.

She testified that she also saw the man in a truck outside the nursery just prior to Police arriving.

Detective constable Joel Alex Hayward said he, along with three other police detectives, were assigned to Vernon Temple childcare centre on the day of June 5 2003.

Being a part of the Forensic Support Unit at Southside, St. Davids, he took and developed various photographs of the exterior and interior of the Vernon Temple Childcare centre, paying particular attention to a ?Smiths? bag he said.

Mr. Hayward said he saw that inside the ?Smiths? bag was a ?Connection?s boutique? bag and an empty ?Motorola? cell phone box, all the while Augustus was present.

On June 10 2003, Mr. Hayward said he took possession of the items and took them to the Forensic Support Unit at Southside, St. David?s for fingerprint examination.

The result was ?negative? meaning that there was no recognisable fingerprint on any of the items.

The case continues this morning before Chief Justice Richard Ground. Victoria Pearman is representing Davis and Oonagh Vaucrosson represents the Crown.
