Players banned after brawl

FA Cup semi-final between Vasco and North Village have been slapped with bans, The Royal Gazette has learned.

Vasco's Keith Jennings, whose initial retaliation against Calvin (Patches) Dill sparked a free-for-all with only two minutes remaining in the match, was hit with a five game suspension by Bermuda Football Association last Thursday.

Dill, who had already been suspended by his club for two games, received a three game ban from the association, the first of which was served on Sunday.

Jennings has also already served one match of his suspension, a ban which effectively rules him out of the upcoming Friendship and FA Cup finals as Vasco seek to become the first team in 20 years to win the triple crown of league, Friendship Trophy and FA Cup.

Vasco, however, will have been relieved at the outcome of the hearing as three other players escaped punishment. Also appearing at the disciplinary meeting were Kentoine Jennings, Keith's brother who came to his aid, Dwight Basden and Clay Smith. All three were severely reprimanded for their conduct during the match at White Hill Field on March 15.

The BFA launched an immediate inquiry into the incidents after referee Stuart Crockwell abandoned the game with Vasco leading 2-0. Fighting broke out when Jennings retaliated after a challenge from his cousin Daniel Jennings. The trouble escalated as players and fans got involved before Basden was allegedly punched by North Village official Sherwin Dill when he hit back after being struck by a female fan as he walked through a group of fans on his way back to the dressing room.

The assault by Dill on Basden happened inside the clubhouse and Basden was reportedly knocked unconscious. He received hospital treatment while Dill was arrested at the ground and taken to the Somerset Police station.

Somerset Trojans player Clifton Anderson has had a 15-year ban imposed by the BFA for assaulting his coach Randy Horton reduced to two years on appeal.

Anderson attacked Horton during a league match against PHC in January when the coach asked Anderson, a substitute, to warm up for a second time late in the game. Anderson reacted angrily, venting his frustration on his coach by dumping a bucket of ice water on him.
