Simons, Russell find range

former Bermuda international lead the First Division scoring charts after the first six weeks of the season.

The pair came head to head on Sunday at St. John's Field when first and second placed Southampton Rangers and Dandy Town met in the day's top match.

And though Simons found the net for the ninth time, the contest did not reach a conclusion as referee Cal Simons abandoned the match three minutes into the second half because of the state of the pitch after a heavy downpour. The goal will not count as the match will have to be replayed.

Darron Simons, who led last season's scoring with 17 league and cup goals, is almost halfway to that mark already. He currently leads the charts with eight goals in eight matches while Russell, Rangers' top scorer in his first season back, has also been in consistent form with seven goals so far this season.

Former Bermuda international Sammy Swan is also enjoying new surroundings, scoring his seventh goal for new club Vasco in Saturday's 1-1 draw with St.

George's Colts to stay among the scoring leaders.

Four of Swan's goals have come against the East Enders, including a hat-trick in the Martonmere Cup.

The scoring race promises to be a wide open affair as other proven scorers are within striking distance of the leaders. Vasco winger Corey Hill, who was second to Simons last year with 14 goals, has five though he has not netted since the Martonmere Cup match against Boulevard on September 20.

Another player on five is Simons' strike partner Carlos Smith while Vasco's Irving Burgess and Rodney Bascome of Boulevard both have four.

Bascome, formerly of Somerset Trojans, doubled his haul with two goals last week against Southampton Rangers in the Friendship Trophy.

There have been four hat-tricks scored by First Division players so far this season -- all in the Martonmere Cup. Corey Hill and Swan achieved that feat in the same match against St. George's as Vasco won 7-0.

In fact, three of four hat-tricks have come against the East Enders with Boulevard substitute Jahmel Samuels also scoring three times against St.

George's.

Samuels' team-mate, Dwight Warren, cracked a treble last week against Dandy Town in the Martonmere Cup semi-final as for the fourth straight year Boulevard reached the final.
