Miss Bermuda Islands off to Sun City
Bermuda Islands 22-year-old Renita Minors feels as she is about to take on the world.
This afternoon Miss Minors will begin her trip to Sun City, South Africa where she will compete in the 1995 Miss World Pageant, which will take place on November 18.
"I feel confident about the contest and a little nervous but I'm ready for it,'' Miss Minors said.
She added: "The waiting is finally over and I have been getting prepared for it. I have taken make-up and hair lessons from Kenneth May of Lady Donna Hair and Beauty Salon and I've talked with Community and Cultural Affairs officer Ms Ruth Thomas about Bermuda's culture.
"I have also been making appearances one of which was at Harrington Sound School where I talked to Primary Three students.'' Miss Minors added that she received helpful hints about the Miss World Pageant from former Miss Bermuda Islands Kelly Hall who represented Bermuda in the contest in 1993.
"I have always watched the pageant on the television but it will be different to actually be there. I am looking forward to meeting other girls from other countries, that is probably the one experience that I would like to take from the contest -- new friends.'' Miss Minors added that she will be taking paintings from Bermudian artists to be part of an auction which will be attended by South African president Nelson Mandela.
"I think this experience will be something for me to tell my children and grandchildren about and hopefully I will be able to see some of the culture outside the Miss World activities.
On bringing the coveted crown back home Miss Minors said: "I think I will represent Bermuda very well and I hope to bring the crown back. The last time Bermuda had a Miss World was when Gina Swainson won and I think it is time for another one.''
