Burgess impresses at pro-trial
Vancouver Whitecaps hopeful Tyrell Burgess is in contention for a return trial at the Canadian professional team having impressed during a recent tryout.
The Bermuda international attended an invitational trial at the USL First Division team before Christmas after falling under the radar of talent scouts who monitored his debut season with Reading Rage.
Brendan Burke, Rage head coach, acted as Burgess' chaperone during his trial and is confident the 22-year-old winger did enough to catch the eye of Whitecaps' coaches.
According to Burke, Burgess' display even surpassed trialists with Major League Soccer (MLS) and United Soccer League Division One (USL-D1) experience.
"The trial went very well for Tyrell and I'm sure something else will come of it," said Burke, who succeeded Bermuda Football Association technical director Derek Broadley as Rage's coach.
"At the moment I have no further information on Tyrell's tryout but he played very well. In Tyrell's trial group there were players with USL-D1 and MLS experience and in my opinion he managed to out-perform them all."
Burgess, who attends Lynn University in Florida, signed for Rage on the recommendation of Broadley and vaulted them into their first ever Eastern Conference Championship with a match-winning penalty during the league play-offs.
He scored three goals and had two assists last season at the Pennsylvania-based youth development club.
"Tyrell was fantastic for us last season and has lots of ability," Burke added.
"We're looking forward to continuing our relationship with Bermuda and hope to have more young Bermudian players come out to play for us in the future."
Former West Ham striker Clyde Best, who until recently owned a 30 percent stake in Rage along with BFA president Richard Calderon and twin brother Robert, reckons Burgess possesses the ability to play professionally in the US.
"I have seen Tyrell play many times for North Village and I believe he has what it takes to play at the higher level," said Best, who also played for Tampa Bay Rowdies, Toronto Blizzard and Portland Timbers in the now defunct North American Soccer League (NASL).
"When Tyrell initially went to Rage both myself and the Calderon brothers still owned a stake in the club and I'm pleased his performances have been recognised by Vancouver Whitecaps."
