Police probe girl's death

Rhiana Moore, 14, was found dead in the mangroves of Blue Hole Hill Park, Hamilton Parish on Saturday Morning.

Police have arrested a St. David's man in connection with the death of 14-year-old CedarBridge student Rhiana Moore.

The girl's lifeless body was discovered within the mangroves at Blue Hole Hill nature reserve on Saturday morning.

The discovery was made shortly after 11 a.m. when a member of the public was walking in the area.

Two tourists kayaking near the scene also alerted Police.

At a press conference yesterday afternoon, Police said foul play had not been ruled out but would comment on little else.

Citing the sensitive nature of the crime and investigation, Police refused to confirm or deny whether there were any indications of sexual assault or to comment on the apparent cause of death.

Police also refused to release information about her last known whereabouts, though they are imploring members of the public who may have spoken with or seen Rhiana on Friday, May 30 to contact them — especially those who may have spoken with the S1 student after 9 p.m.

Michael Stevens, manager at Blue Hole Water Sports at Grotto Bay, comforted the visiting couple who spotted the teen's body 300 meters from the Causeway.

The couple, who have since left the Island, decided to spend their last day in Bermuda kayaking but returned after only 15 minutes and told him of their grisly discovery.

"We all jumped in the motorboat with my cell phone and went over," he said. "We could already hear the sirens of the emergency vehicles.

"There was quite a group of people, about five or six and people were on their cell phones. It's certainly nothing you expect to see."

Police and a local forensic team arrived on the scene shortly after 11 a.m. and Rhiana was pronounced dead at the scene.

Yesterday, however, Police refused to comment on specifics about the case while rumours about the circumstances of the death swirled about the Island.

Police did confirm that a male was arrested in St. David's in connection with the case but would not reveal his name, age or whether he had any previous criminal convictions. They added that they were also pursuing other lines of inquiry.

A forensic pathologist from Canada is flying in tomorrow to examine the body while 16 officers have already been assigned to the case locally.

Police Commissioner George Jackson said the case was a top priority: "This incident hits at the core of society and we will pursue it vigorously."

He extended his condolences to the family and assured the public that Police were working around the clock on the investigation.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines also commented that rumours flying around the Island were at times hindering the investigation and asked people to be sensitive but come forward to Police with any information they had about Rhiana's movements on Friday or the crime.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Serious Crime Unit on 299-4315 or to contact the confidential CrimeStoppers hotline, at 1-800-623-8477.
