Bermuda players named for classic
are busy firming up travel plans and rosters for the six teams participating in the tournament.
Wade Dooley, one of the most brilliant second row players ever to play for England, has given word that he will be part of the England Classicals squad for the tournament which begins on November 7.
Closer to home, the 14 players from Bermuda who will comprise the Old Bermuda XV squad have been named, with almost half of them coming from Renegades.
Stepping into the line-up and limelight from the Amstel League champions will be props Roy Dunn and Danny Forsythe, No. 8 Ali Nicholl, scrum half Dave Taylor, outhalf Phil Heaney and fullback Stuart Outerbridge.
Named to the squad from Teachers is back row specialist Richard Raistrick, flankers Tony Roach and Pat McHugh, outhalf Gary Kelson and centre Keiron Peacock.
Rounding out the roster are prop Colin Newell and wing John O'Kelly Lynch from Mariners and lock Allan Gorbutt from Police.
The Bermuda players will join a group of all-stars from Ireland, Scotland and Wales which includes such stalwarts as flanker Phillip Matthews, skipper of Ireland's 1991 World Cup team, and Irish centre David Irwin.
Besides England and Old Bermuda, teams participating in the fifth Classic will be defending champions New Zealand, Australia, USA Eagles and France.
New Zealand, already installed as pre-tournament favourites, will once again be led by brutish titan Andy Haden.
In addition to Dooley, England -- runners-up in 1992 -- have included several names to strengthen their squad from a year ago. Fullback Dusty Hare, wing Mike Harrison, outside half Huw Davies and prop Jeff Probyn return to the island along with regulars Steve Smith, Paul Rendall, Bob Hesford and Mike Rafter.
The Australian team will have few changes from the outfit which showed unquestionable skills and quiet self-confidence a year ago. Invigorating the Wallabies will be outside half Glen Ella and fullback Roger Gould.
The USA Eagles, whose unique blend of talents were sorely missed last year, return this time. Included on the roster will be hooker Bruce Monroe, props John Jealco and Rick Bailey and wings Mike Purcell, Mike Smith and Lin Walton.
It remains unclear whether France will be able to send a full contingent, but organisers are hopeful that the team will be sending lock Claude Spanghero and outside half Patrick Lescarboura. Fullback Serge Blanco, undeniably one of the most exciting players in the modern era, is also expected to make a Classic appearance.
