Carey named new Permanent Secretary for Environment

Wayne Carey is the new Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment and will start work on Monday.

Mr. Carey was educated in Bermuda at the Central School, the Berkeley Institute, and the Academic Sixth Form Centre.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Science, Honours in Biology from York University in Ontario, Canada and a Master of Science in Aquatic Science from the University of Guelph also in Ontario, Canada, Mr. Carey went on to hold a number of environmental related posts in both Canada and Bermuda.

Mr. Carey began his career in the early 1980s as an Aquaculture Biologist for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, and went on to become an Environmental Scientist for Ontario Hydro, a public service utility company.

Mr. Carey returned to Bermuda in 1994 and and during the last 11 years has held a number of prominent posts at the Bermuda Electric Light Company (BELCO), including Environment Officer, Manager of the Environment Department and Director of Energy Supply.

As a member of the Marine Resource Board, the Board of Trustees of the Bermuda Maritime Museum and Vice President and Member of Council of the Bermuda National Trust, Mr. Carey embarked on a number of initiatives to ensure the appropriate balance between economic growth and the preservation of Bermuda?s natural capital.

Now as member of Civil Service, Mr. Carey hopes his prior involvement with these environmental organisations will successfully increase the potential of joint opportunities with the Ministry of the Environment.

In welcoming Mr. Carey the Acting Secretary to the Cabinet, Mr. Warren Jones said: ?I am delighted that Mr. Carey has chosen to join the Civil Service.

?His knowledge and depth of experience will certainly be beneficial to the Government and people of Bermuda.

When asked about his new appointment, Mr. Carey said: ?Bermuda is at a crossroads whereby it is essential to implement sustainable development principles that ensure an appropriate balance between economic growth and preservation of the environment.

?The Ministry of Environment has many skilled and dedicated staff with whom I intend to build a strong working relationship that emphasises a creative, team-oriented approach to meeting the significant environmental challenges facing Bermuda.?

Mr. Carey replaces former Permanent Secretary Brian Rowlinson.
