Goater’s men end the Hornets voodoo

North Village 3 Dandy Town 1North Village coach Shaun Goater believes his team have finally broken their Dandy Town voodoo after defeating Hornets for the second time this month.Goater admits he had become annoyed of hearing people say Hornets ‘had got Village’s number’ but feels the tide has turned in Rams’ favour following yesterday’s league victory at Bernard Park.A brace from Keishen Bean and a goal from debutant Clay Darrell, son of former Village striker Clay Smith, helped Village to their third Premier Division win of the season.Deashun Butterfield scored for Hornets who lost to Village in the Dudley Eve semi-finals a fortnight ago.“There was a saying that Town had got Village’s card ... for me that was the challenge that was laid down,” said Goater.“We have beaten them twice this season within the space of a few weeks and I think that puts to bed any talk of Hornets having our card.“I’m pleased for the players because we edged the game in terms of our opportunities and I felt the better team won.”Bean opened the scoring in the first half with a rebound after Ralph Bean’s initial effort had been saved by Hornets goalkeeper Daniel Johnson.Having had to wait for his debut after missing the transfer deadline, Darrell made up for lost time when he cut in from the left and curled his shot into the far corner to double his team’s lead. After the break Hornets twice threatened Village’s goal in quick succession with Angelo Simmons and Kwonde Lathan both missing the target. On 75 minutes Butterfield pulled a goal back for Hornets with a delightful chipped effort, but his side couldn’t find an equaliser despite forcing Village into some desperate defending at times.Bean put the game beyond doubt in the final minute with a left foot strike after clever link-up play by the elusive Ralph Bean. With the addition of newcomers like Darrell and the return of veterans such as Sammy DeGraff, Goater believes his side are starting to resemble a ‘real’ Village outfit.“We knew early on we were short of a few players and some of the young players had to step up,” he said.“I’ve had to play midfielders in defence all season as I’ve had no out-and-out defenders.“They have got used to it, though, and have got used to their defensive responsibilities. Credit to the youngsters, too, because they have been listening and implementing what we’ve been telling them.”Goater added: “Clay’s not a bad player and gives us another dimension. He adds to what we have although he’s taken a knock and could be out for a few weeks now.“I was pleased for him today because he’s remained hungry while he has had to wait and stepped up for us in a big way today.”North Village: D Adams, P Castle, J Sousa, J Jennings, R Bean, K Talbot, S DeGraff, J Davis, K Dill, K Bean, C Darrell (P Smith, 80)Substitutes not used: Z Hendrickson, W Ming, K KnightDandy Town: D Johnson, A Lowe, K Lathan, D Ming, R Wells (L Simmons, 76), A Gibbons, A Rocker, A Simmons, K Tucker, F FranksonSubstitutes not used: S Tuzo, C Burgess, T Goater, Z TuzoReferee: A MouchetteMan of the match: J Jennings (Village)
