Readers to come together
month to encourage avid readers to come together.
The sessions will be held on the second Thursday of each month at 7.30 p.m. in the Reading Room of the Bermuda National Library.
On October 10 "Nothin' but a Pond Dog'' by Llewellyn Emery will be discussed.
On November 14 "Snow falling on Cedars'' by David Guterson followed "The Hundred Secret Senses'' by Amy Tan on January 9, and on March 6 a book will be selected as well as on April 10.
The cost is $5 per session or $30 for six months. Books may be purchased from the Friends of the Bermuda National Library. Refreshments will be provided.
The first selection of books carries out the theme of multi-cultralism. These titles have been pre-selected for the group in order to get the programme going.
However, for future sessions, members will be able to suggest titles and even to lead the discussion on their favourite books.
There are no requirements to becoming a member of the group other than to bring a love of books and ideas to the meetings. If for some reason it is not possible to read a book in any given months, members may still come along for the camaraderie and to hear the discussion.
Rules will be kept to a minimum. Interested persons should sign up as soon as possible as space is limited.
*** The Bermuda Historical Society will be holding their annual general meeting at Par-La-Ville on Tuesday October 15 at 8 p.m.
At that time attending members will be asked to confirm appointments of officers for the coming year.
Following the meeting the society's president Andrew Bermingham will give a short talk, illustrated with slides about "Breaker Morant'' and the "Bushbeld Carbineers'', a compelling story that runs parallel with what was going on in Bermuda during the Boer War.
Afterwards tea and coffee will be served in the dining.
