Roberts follows golf greats

Bermuda junior golfer Ryan Roberts will be looking to emulate the success of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Davis Love when he competes at the

Optimist International Junior Championships in Florida later this month.

Many of the world's leading golf professionals either won the same tournament or finished in the top five when they played in the event as teenagers.

Roberts will be teeing off at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Gardens in the boys' 16-18 division from July 29 through August 1.

He'll be joining hundreds of junior players between the ages of 10 and 18 who will arrive from all corners of the globe to compete in the various age groups.

The Optimist prides itself as an international event, with players representing 43 US states, four Canadian provinces and 33 nations.

Besides Woods, Mickelson, Love and Els, previous top finishers include Beth Bauer, Jonathan Byrd, Jason Day, Bill Haas, Brittany Lincicome, Jeff Overton, Stacy Prammanasudh, Jennifer Rosales, Nancy Lopez and Michelle McGann,

The event returns to the PGA course for the 15th consecutive year.

Four courses will be used for the event – the Champion, Palmer, Haig and Squire.

The PGA National is home to the PGA TOUR's Honda Classic and has been host to the PGA Seniors Championship, the 1987 PGA Championship and the 1983 Ryder Cup.

Scores, photos and tee times will be updated daily throughout the Championship website www.optimist.org/golf.

n Daniel Augustus shot a one-under par 69 at Tuckers Point to claim the fourth 'major' of this season's Jack Daniels Tour.

The Port Royal employee was the only golfer to shoot below par at the event, and he finished a shot ahead of Eric West and Paul Adams.

A double bogey with four holes to play gave Augustus a few nervy moments but with West bogeying consecutive holes on the homeward nine, the gap never got any closer.

With the Tour reaching its closing stretch, Scott Roy still leads the Gosling's Invitational Order of Merit, but the gap has been trimmed to a mere 10 points over Paul Adams and 16 points over Twilton Smith.
