Hemp to captain county side
If preparing for his Bermuda debut wasn?t enough, veteran county cricketer David Hemp has just been named captain of Glamorgan.
After four years in charge, Robert Croft stepped down over the weekend as skipper of the Welsh county to be replaced by last year?s player of the year and potential World Cup star, Hemp.
Bermuda-born Hemp will take charge of Sunday?s Pro40match against Lancashire as well as the final fixture of the season, a four-day game against Gloucestershire.
?It is a tremendous challenge,? Hemp told the Royal Gazette yesterday after revealing the decision was actually taken late on Saturday night ahead of Sunday?s official announcement.
?You always want to move forward in your career and this is a big step and I am looking forward to it.
?Glamorgan might not be in the best shape financially, so there are going to be some serious challenges in bringing on a young and growing team.
?I take charge immediately and we have just a couple of matches left and then it is a case of preparing for next year and taking the side on.?
Hemp admits that taking over from Croft ? who he has played with since the age of ten when at Swansea Cricket Club ? is ?not the ideal way? to be handed the captaincy but vowed to give the job his best.
Following the conclusion of the season, and a post-season 20-20 inter-counties tournament, Hemp flies back to the country of his birth to complete his qualifying period ahead of a possible debut, ?if selected? on the tour of Africa in November.
?It?s going to be a very hectic and busy few months with training with and hoping to play for Bermuda and the captaincy.
?I just have to make sure I manage my time well and ensure that I give my best on both fronts.?
Hemp has had a mixed year for his county, often making it into the 20s and 30s without going on to make many huge scores.
Two of his better knocks, a 60 in a C&G game against Kent and a 70 against West Indies ?A?, both came when acting as skipper in Croft?s absence.
?Hopefully that will continue, sometimes when you?re captain it helps you play better because you have other things to worry about and don?t end up over-thinking about your batting,? he said.
