National team suffer Games misery
Bermuda's national women's team have been forced to accept a disheartening winless campaign at the Central American and Caribbean Games currently taking place in Puerto Rico.
Bermuda placed last in a field of six teams after losing six matches and failing to score a single goal.
In their final games, Bermuda fell 1-0 to Puerto Rico last Thursday before suffering a 9-0 thrashing from gold-medal contenders Jamaica on Saturday.
The Island women faced Puerto Rico once again in their last match on Monday but went down again to their opponents 1-0.
Trinidad and Tobago were scheduled to square off against Jamaica in the gold medal match yesterday afternoon. Mexico were playing Barbados for the bronze.
Meanwhile, back in Bermuda the women's B league table experienced a shuffle as Cardinals stormed their way to the top by handing Swallows their first loss of the season, 1-0.
The match was evenly matched with the lone goal coming in the second half as Iesha Castle found herself in front of goal with the ball after a Swallows defensive scramble.
Swallows pressed for the equaliser but Cards' defence was more than up to the task and repelled all challenges.
Swallows were kept on the retreat as Cards continually released passes down field to Angelika Wilson.
Police Orioles are hot on their heels, however, as they also have 15 points and did not play last weekend.
Swallows, who have played one less game than the league leaders are not far behind, suggesting the remainder of the season may be a slugfest in B play.
Also notching a victory in the B league over the weekend were the Bluebirds who put Canaries away 1-0.
Blues A squad also added three points with a 4-1 win over Canaries. Blues are now tied at the top of the A table with Swallows.
Canaries were missing leading A league goalscorer Lisa DeSilva who was playing in Puerto Rico.
The Blues midfield of Holly Flaxbeard, Sarah Maltby and Sarah Smith found their way through the Canaries defence, putting goalkeeper Tammy Ray under pressure early and eventually netting two goals before the interval.
The second half saw Canaries push forward and Rhonda Rawlins successfully netted a penalty stroke to put Canaries on the board.
But Bluebirds soon re-established their dominance, closing out the match with two more goals.
In the men's league, Rebels and BCS Panthers went head to head for a 1-1 result.
The split marked the first points earned by the Panthers this season.
Panthers took to the pitch in a defiant mood against the second placed Rebels, who spent the majority of the game in scoring territory but could not find their way past the sweeper/keeper combination of Justin Freisenbrusch and Hill who were in exceptional form.
Freisenbrusch formulated a plan with his young squad to deny Rebels any time to make the passes which effectively shut them down in the first half.
First blood was drawn by Panthers through the forward work of Chris Chapman, Jerome Overbee and Andrew Chlebek.
They pressured the Rebels defence into an error and Chlebek hammered the ball past 'keeper Mike Smith.
Rebels found themselves with their backs against the wall until striker Simon Farrington stepped up for the equaliser.
