Equestrians eager to compete in CAC Games

Bermuda could be represented this summer at the 21st Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in show jumping which is making its first appearance at the Games being held in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.

"There has been some interest in competing at the CAC Games from a few of our riders," said Mike Cherry, head of the Bermuda Equestrian Federation.

"Equestrian is something new to the Games and we potentially will have someone there. We have had a couple of people interested in going but the main question is: how much is it going to cost to get the horses there?"

Cherry said that Ki-Juan Minors, Stephanie Wilkinson and Jill Terceira have all expressed an interest in representing Bermuda in Puerto Rico when the Games start on July 17.

"Ki Minors is in Florida and doing well and Stephanie Wilkinson is one of our young riders," he said.

Terceira is based in Holland and represented Bermuda at the 2008 Olympics and the 2007 Pan-Am Games.

"Jill Terceira has expressed interest but it will cost a lot of money to fly her horse from Holland. Transporting the horses is the big question. But we have made an entry in principle – we are just trying to find out what it is all going to cost and so on."

While Minors, Wilkinson and Terceira all compete in show jumping, Cherry said that there will also be dressage and eventing at the Games but "we don't have anyone looking at that."

Minors and his team, IEC Aiken, recently finished in sixth place overall at the City League Finals at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa last month.

Last summer Minors won the silver medal at the Asheville Mountain Classic International Show Jumping event in Asheville, North Carolina. Competing in the Special Jumper Class, Minors also helped his team win the bronze medal for the show.

Wilkinson has also represented Bermuda in the past at the Caribbean Equestrian Association's Junior Jumping Competition and also in the FEI World Dressage Challenge.

There will be 32 countries represented at the CAC Games this summer led by powerhouses Cuba and Mexico.

Bermuda has won one gold, three silver and 10 bronze medals at the Games which are held every four years in between the Summer Olympics.

The last CAC Games were staged in July, 2006 in Cartagena, Colombia.

n This weekend there will be a fundraising show at the National Equestrian Centre at Vesey Street.

The show is the first of 2010 and will be staged by Ian Truran and Dawn Fox. The show will consist of equitation, hunter and jumper classes.

American judge Carol Coleman will fly in from Florida for the event which starts at 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday – entry is free.

Coleman is a senior judge for the United States Equestrian Federation and the Canadian Equestrian Federation.
