Cut a rug with the spicy se?oras & se?ores of salsa
Building on the growing popularity of Salsa dancing in Bermuda, a third workshop is less than a year is scheduled for this month at West Pembroke School.
Troy Anthony of Troy of Latin Motions, along with local promoter and organiser, Kim Paynter, are putting on another four-day workshop at West Pembroke School - four classes each for beginners, intermediate and advanced Salsa, Cuban `casino' Creole and west coast styles.
Three overseas couples, headed by the husband and wife pair of Troy and Georgette Anthony, will head the classes on October 17, 18, 19 and 20. Also appearing will be David Stein and Espie Hernandez and guest dancers Steven Vargas and Stephanie Stevenson.
Troy, who married Georgette here in Bermuda in April, is a 30-year-old Salsa fanatic, teacher and choreographer and performer who lives and breathes for the dance. He has family roots in the islands of Cape Verde and Barbados but lives in New Orleans where he is presently teaching `Hollywood Style' in the Big Easy, teaching five days a week at four New Orleans locations. He is recognised as one of the top Salsa dancers around.
Anthony is working with an adult group (Latin Motions) and a kids group (Salsaninos) and is the Salsa web correspondent for Louisiana and may soon have his own column in the Louisiana Weekly.
David Stein currently lives in San Diego, California and has been teaching and performing Salsa for four years. He is San Diego's most recognised dancer, known for his smooth style and ability to work well with whomever he is partnered. He has incorporated many other styles of dance into his own Salsa, his dance background including: hip-hop, break-dancing, Tango, Swing, Waltz, Cha-cha and Rumba.
Over time Stein has had the opportunity to learn from many great instructors and that is what makes him a well-rounded dancer and instructor, not to mention an exciting performer to watch. He is also co-founder and director of Rumba Rica Dance Co. with his dance partner Espie Hernandez and together they have put together many successful workshops in San Diego.
The workshop earlier this year attracted some 120 people and Mr. Paynter expects a similar response, though he says space will be limited as he will restrict the number of people taking the class to 150 "in order to provide value for money".
"People should try to get their tickets early," he urged.
"I just want Salsa to benefit," said the organiser. "We try to keep the prices low so that a lot of people can attend. This workshop will feature the best.
"David is a good friend of Troy, and he recommends who he thinks will be the best to come here. In this instance he recommends David and Espi. David loves to teach, is outgoing and has a warm personality."
Georgette and Espi will be teaching ladies the proper "styling and shines" with south and west coast flavours.
Tickets to the class are $90 for adults and $45 for high school and Bermuda College student as an effort is being made this year to expose younger people to Salsa dancing. Sign up forms will be available at Music World at Bermudian Arcade.
"Troy always likes to get young people involved," said Mr. Paynter. "Depending on how many we get we might have earlier classes. The young men will be taught dance etiquette and how to be respectful to young ladies."
Stephanie Stephenson, at just 17, will also be able to relate to the young people.
There is also a `Fiesta Frenzy' party on the Saturday night at Hamilton Princess for $35. Or those attending both the workshop and the party can obtain special tickets for both for just $115.
For more information and tickets, contact Kim Paynter at 297-0584 after 4.30 p.m., on 799-5203 or on email kimpaynteryahoo.com or salsabermudaibl.bm.
"This will be the third workshop I have put on and each has been well supported. I thank people for their participation," said Mr. Paynter.
Salsa continues to grow in popularity on the Island with big turnouts at The Deep at Elbow Beach on Thursdays and also at the Police Club on the first and third Saturdays in each month.
Also local Salsa dancers are constantly being asked to perform, including during the lunch break at the 100th anniversary Cup Match this summer. They will also be performing during Harbour Nights tomorrow night on Front Street.
