Late arrivals cost Warwick

Flatts 115-2 It should have been one of the best matches of the season so far in the First Division.

But as a contest it lasted only four hours after Warwick, Open League leaders going into the weekend, paid dearly for the late arrival of two key batsmen.

Perry Scott and Trent Lightbourne both arrived at Southampton Oval after the 11.00 start, thinking the match was beginning at noon.

The match was already in progress and Warwick in early trouble after losing Trent Simmons without a run on the board and Daniel Caines and Jeffrey James in quick succession with the score on 24-3.

Kevin Hurdle grabbed all three wickets but his spell ended on the last delivery of his fifth over when he received a second warning for running on the wicket in his follow through and was subsequently banned from bowling by the umpires.

But it mattered little as Derek Wright, who finished Hurdle's over, duly took four wickets of his own to finish with four for 37 off 9.5 overs. Teenager Nelson Bascome Jr, who bowled unchanged, claimed three for 59 from 14 overs as Warwick were dismissed in just 28.5 overs.

High men for Warwick were Stevie Lightbourne with 33, Ritchie Foggo (23) -- they added 34 for the fourth wicket -- and James with 16 before Stevie Brimmer scored 13 at number 11.

Flatts wrapped up victory by 3.05 p.m. with Hewvonnie Brown stroking four fours and a six in his 39 not out while Rodney Woolridge finished with 15 not out. The pair added 54 for the third wicket to complete victory after Millard Bean (38) and Quinn Outerbridge (13) had put on 56 for the first wicket.

Bean hit five fours and two sixes.

PHC 135 Somerset 140-6 Wendell White and Sidney Simmons claimed seven wickets between them to restrict PHC to 135 at St. John's Field, and then had to come good with the bat at a crucial time to assure victory for Somerset.

Somerset were coasting to victory at 63-1 before four wickets fell in the space of seven runs to make it 70-5 and allow PHC to seize the upper hand.

White, who finished with 28 not out, added 27 vital runs with Simmons for the sixth wicket in taking the score to 97 and then White and Craig Brangman (18 not out) added 43 for the unbroken seventh wicket to seal victory by four wickets.

Earlier Steven Mendes (19) and Shannon Warner (17) had given the visitors a good start, before Mendes' dismissal sparked a collapse as Kallan Johnston picked up his first wicket. Johnston finished with three for 28 from 11 overs.

Opener Antoine Greene was high man for PHC with 33 while Kenny Mills scored 26 and Arthur Richardson 25. Simmons took four for 39 from 15 overs of spin while White, who shared the new ball, had impressive figures of three for 23 from 17 overs with seven maidens. Warner took two for 15 off 12.3 overs with six maidens.

Social Club 160 Somerset Bridge 162-9 Denzil Dill snatched six wickets for 33 and Leroy Brangman struck 58 runs to lead Somerset Bridge to this one-wicket triumph over Social Club at Nationals Sports Club.

The match-up between the bottom clubs proved interesting with both clubs approaching the clash without a win in either Open or Overs play.

Batting first, Social Club reached their respectable total with Jaymo Durham and Eddie Benjamin each striking 38. Webster Mills followed with 17 while openers Thomas Brangman and Dennis Furbert scored 13 apiece.

Dill led Bridge's bowling attack and received his haul of wickets from 12.5 overs, including two maidens. O'Neil Virgil took two for 11 from four overs and a maiden while David Jones had two for 32 from seven overs.

Inspired by Brangman's fine knock in the middle order, Bridge managed to record their first win of the season. Others among the runs were David Jones with 23, Virgil with 17 not out and skipper Corvett Lambert with 10 not out.

Terry Stovell led Social Club in bowling with three for 36 from 12 overs, while Jaymo Durham took three for 41 off 15.4 overs.

Former Warwick and Somerset batsman Robin Swan scored 69 to help his team, United Social Club, move into top spot in the eight-team Atlanta Cricket League on Sunday with a four wicket victory over Climax CC.

Darren (Butch) Burchall, a student in Atlanta, scored for United in his second outing for the team. Burchall and Swan's team are also made up of Trinidadians, Jamaicas and Barbadians while the league itself contains a number of Indians and Pakistanians.

"It's not like the Premier Division but it's of a competitive Second Division standard,'' said Burchall who mentioned that Jamaican Desmond Lewis plays in the league as does former Police fast bowler Adsyl Hutson.
