<Bz29>Abend shines in Ravens win

Ana Abend led Ravens to a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats last weekend in the only match played in the women’s A league.Abend snatched both her open play goals in the first 21 minutes of play, putting Ravens in control of the match.

The win was tarnished only slightly by a poor performance on short corners with Ravens failing to convert on any of the seven attempts they earned.

Wildcats Christianthia Bartley, however, managed to hit the mark late in the second half for Wildcats on one of that team’s three corner attempts.

Ravens also collected two wins in B league play — winning both matches by 3-0 shutouts.

The first win came Saturday over Wildcats with Emma Norman, J. Adderley and Louisa Freisenbruch all hitting the target.

In Sunday’s match against Swifts, meanwhile, Liz Gardner, Rachael Beasley and Alex Wheatley were the goal-scorers.

The wins boost Ravens to first place in the league with 35 points.

In other B play, Swallows secured a goal in the dying minutes of their match against Cardinals for a 1-0 win.

Karen Turner fired the winner in the 66th minute.

And Bluebirds walked to a 2-0 victory over Canaries on Sunday. Ellen Reoch and Liz Wright were the goal-scorers.

Now second place Swifts collected a 3-1 win over Cardinals with captain Angela Dunstan earning a hat-trick.

D. Penning scored Cardinals lone goal.

In the men’s league, Chameleons threw the brakes on Panthers winning streak with a 4-3 squeaker.

Captain Pete Illston led the Chameleons with two goals while Fabian Bishop and Mark Finnigan each added one.

Andrew Pearson, Matt Spencer and Donavan Simmons scored for Panthers.

In the other weekend men’s action, Upstarts shutout Rebels 3-0 with Mark Norman, Gareth Tavares and P. Brown securing the goals.
