New sport gets kick-start
world with the latest kid's craze to sweep the Island? How does kick-scooter soccer sound? Earlier this month organisers at The Centre community centre on Angle Street set up the first ever tournament in the new sport following requests from local youngsters.
The Centre on Angle Street hosted a new kind of tournament this month, where teenagers and children displayed an acute skill with the football while at the same time keeping mobile on their kick-scooters.
"It's really their idea -- really creative.'' said Deeanda Bannister, supervisor of The Centre.
"They come everyday now -- hoping to get some play in.'' With some help from Harold Minors, senior community worker and Deeanda, rules were established and the first tournament went off without a problem.
Winning the singles bracket, Kawada Smith defeated Suleman Bashir 3-0 after a series of elimination contests for the finals.
And taking the doubles, the Temiko Wilson/Randy Broadbelt team-up defeated Andrew Samuels/Eric Smith, 3 to 2.
Tournament organisers are hoping for another tournament sometime in November.
Young Observer will provide in-depth coverage for that tournament and will speak with the game creators in November.
Those interested in participating should contact The Centre at 292-1343.
