Island swim pair set new records

Two top swimmers have set new Bermuda records at a meet in Canada.Competing at the recent Atlantic University Swimming Championships at Dalhousie University, Kiera Aitken and Michael O'Connor broke three local marks in the pool.Aitken's winning times of 57.87 seconds in the 100-metre freestyle and 29.23 seconds in the 50-metre backstroke were new records for the Island's women in those events. The 19-year-old also took top spot in the 100-metres backstroke in 1:03.76 minutes (just outside her personal best) and was second in the 50 metres freestyle in 27.03 seconds to earn the "Female Swimmer of the Meet" title.

The second-year computer science student is currently in the top ten of the first three events and 14th in the 50m freestyle on the Canadian University Swimming rankings.

O'Connor eclipsed Stephen Fahy's mark of 59.48 seconds in the 15-18 age-group 100-metre butterfly. The new record-holder posted 58.44, en route to fifth place in the race.

The 18-year-old was also third (26.39) in the 50-metre butterfly (ranked 18th) and sixth (54.44) in the 100-metre freestyle.

Meanwhile, another Bermudian, Graham Smith, won the 200-metre individual medley (2:09.36 minutes), placed fifth in the 200-metre breaststroke (2:30.38) and finished sixth in both the 100-metre breaststroke (1:06.43) and the 50-metre freestyle (24.73 seconds).

The 21-year-old is ranked 11th in the 200 breaststroke, 14th in the 100 breaststroke and 16th in the 200 medley.

This trio have qualified to represent Dalhousie at the Canadian University Sport Championships later this month. The February 21-23 meet takes place at the University of Victoria in British Columbia.
