Swimmers face distance challenge
BASA pool tomorrow (1.00 p.m.) with an expected entry of some 90 swimmers taking part in 28 events.
The Island's three clubs, Sharks, Harbour and Triangles, are all expected to enter large contingents.
Girls will get the opportunity to swim one of the longer distance freestyle events, the 400 metres. Thirteen swimmers have entered that race with Alicia Mullan of Sharks having the fastest entry time.
However, close on her heels will be 13-year-old Elisha Miller of Harbour, while national squad members Abigail Madeiros and Zoe Roberts are also in the field.
For the males an added feature will be the 1500 metres freestyle, but the entry as of late this week was small with just four swimmers registered, including 14-year-old Ronald Cowen of Sharks who is expected to improve on his entry time of 18:46.33.
Three swimmers who have been attending school in the United States are now back on the Island and will also compete this weekend.
Stanley Harris, 22, of Sharks, will compete in the 100 and 200 metres backstroke and the 200m individual medley, Craig Roberts, 20, of Harbour, takes part in the 100 and 200m breastroke and the 50m freestyle while Matthew Hammond, 14, goes into the 100 and 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke.
BASA officials are hopeful that several will crack the triple A mark in their respective age groups, therefore qualifying them for the Caribbean and Central American Age Group Championships to be held in Guadalajara, Mexico in July.
The final chance for the swimmers to post qualifying times for the CCCAN is at the National Swimming Championships between June 16-18.
