Families flock to Airport to welcome home loved ones
A very relieved mother, Kitty Knudsen was at the Airport last night to welcome home her 14-year-old son, Henrik, who was travelling from London on his own.
Mrs. Knudsen had a hard time holding back the tears as she gave her son a much needed hug and said he had been in the car on the way to the airport when news came through of the attacks on the London Underground.
?But we did not know if it would spill over to the airport, you just didn?t know,? she said.
She said it was the first time Henrik travelled home on his own and she was ?worried sick? most of the day.
Also arriving on BA 2233 yesterday was British ex-pat Karien West.
She told she was in the Hampshire area of the UK when the attacks occurred and was driving to Gatwick along the M25 when traffic started building up.
She said there were a significant amount of Police cars and ambulances on the road and that she hated to think they were on their way to the scenes of the blasts.
Miss West said security at Gatwick was also ?tight?, but she felt much safer knowing that these steps were being taken by airport security.
Bermudian Luisa Sousa and her daughter, Lisa were at Bermuda International Airport last night waiting for her daughter, Natalie, and her two-year-old grandson Adam to arrive.
She told earlier that they had flown in from Scotland and her son-in-law in the UKhad no idea what had happened in London until he had to cross a bridge and noticed the increase in Police presence.
?He said there were helicopters flying over head and he felt like he was back in the army,? she said.
She added that when he got home and turned on the television he saw what had happened and tried to call Natalie, who was flying to Bermuda from Gatwick with their son.
?We were all very worried, not knowing if the attacks might spill over to the airports or not,? she said.
Natalie said she was just happy to be ?home? yesterday.
Meanwhile Nicola Davis and her son Charlie were at the Airport to welcome her mother Dee Coulson.
She said her mother had been staying in Clapham on Wednesday night and she was not sure whether her mother had gone through London or not to get to the Gatwick airport.
?I was also very worried because my sister and brother work in London,? she said, confirming that they were alright when she spoke to them.
Flight BA 2233 arrived in Bermuda on time last night, but minus a few passengers.
BA spokesperson Sallie Singleton said it was believed the passengers might have missed the flight due to the halt in public transport in and out of London.
She said passengers who missed their flights would be allowed to re-book.
Ms Singleton said the Gatwick Express from Victoria Street Station was operational and while the Heathrow Express from Paddington Station had been halted for a short time, it was back in operation within hours.
?Busses around and between the two airports also remained operational as are all flights out of London,? she said.
Ms Singleton added that the British Airways London Eye had been closed and there was also an increase in security at all airports.
