Jackson slams ?uncaring? Government

Shadow Minister for Seniors Louise Jackson slammed Government for being uncaring to single mothers, the homeless and seniors.

Mrs. Jackson hit out during the House of Assembly session on Monday when she introduced a motion on the Financial Assistance Amendment Regulations 2004.

The measures cover seniors, the disabled, people?s whose property?s Annual Rental Value (ARV) is more than $9,900, persons who rent a room in a house where they are not a family member and persons who are residents of rest homes which recently raised their fees.

Mrs Jackson said: ?After the Minister of Health and Family Services (Patrice Minors) read her statement on December 10, 2004, she sat down and that was the end of it, there was silence. Where was the rest of it.?

?As far I know the Department of Financial Assistance is mandated to ensure all Bermudians to maintain a minimum standard of living. Absolutely nothing has been done for the homeless, nothing.

?The Minister promised on two occasions to do something about the homeless, she said she had a plan but there is a vast problem out there for the homeless.?

Mrs. Jackson said the march on affordable housing showed people were concerned about affordable housing and financial assistance.

?Children are being removed from their parents? care because that parent is homeless. How can you in all good conscience as a Government take a child from their home because they are homeless.? Mrs. Jackson said a lot of people were not going to financial assistance because they knew their children would be taken away from them.

At one point the Premier Alex Scott interrupted Mrs. Jackson to say: ?Its not true, your nose is growing Mrs. Jackson.?

Mrs. Jackson continued her tirade and said evicting single mothers was wrong and there was something wrong with the Government.

When Mrs. Jackson introduced her motion, the Health Minister was not present but returned later to rebut claims Government was not caring.

Mrs. Minors called on Mrs. Jackson to stop misleading people.

She said if Mrs. Jackson knew of people sleeping in cars or caves she should present their cases to her, complete with facts not anecdotal evidence.

?I welcome the opportunity to meet the marchers as this is a caring Government,? Mrs. Minors said
